About The Position

The Project Digitization Archivist is a full-time project-based position working with the Norwegian American Historical Association (NAHA) archivist to digitize and describe the materials from the American Relief for Norway papers. The one-year project is funded by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, a component of the Minnesota Clean Water, Land and Legacy constitutional amendment.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from a library program accredited by the American Library Association, from an archives program meeting the guidelines of the Society of American Archivists, or an equivalent advanced degree with relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with standard metadata schema and vocabularies.
  • Strong organization and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for delving into technologies that may be unfamiliar.
  • Experience in digitization and metadata creation, hands-on experience in calibrating scanning equipment to ensure best capture of images, and experience in quality control procedures.
  • Knowledge of processing collections and archival standards and practices for preservation of documents, photographs, and artifacts.
  • Ability and willingness to support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community including faculty, staff, students, and constituents.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Omeka content management system.
  • Working knowledge of national and professional standards on copyright, intellectual property, and Fair Use.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the Norwegian-American immigrant experience, including historiography/history, geography, language, and literature.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange and describe archival material following DACS standards.
  • Assess basic preservation needs and make note of materials in need of further conservation.
  • Digitize selected archival material following NAHA guidelines.
  • Edit images of archival materials as needed in Adobe Photoshop.
  • Create a detailed and complete metadata entry with descriptive, structural, and administrative metadata.
  • Assist in the management of digital assets for long-term preservation, including exporting digital assets to Omeka, and reviewing digital collections to ensure accuracy.
