About The Position

The Project Design Technician I supports SEMCO’s Construction team by helping plan, coordinate, and track gas construction projects. This is a blend of office and field work, where you’ll assist with project design, documentation, customer coordination, and on‑site support to ensure projects are completed safely and according to standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • College coursework or vocational training in drafting, surveying, electrical, wiring, GIS, project planning, or a related field
  • Gas or utility experience preferred, but not required
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar design tools is a plus
  • Strong organization and attention to detail
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Customer-focused and professional approach
  • Comfortable using computers and business software, with the ability to learn new systems
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical concepts preferred
  • Must be able to safely operate a vehicle under the company’s driving policy
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors and walk long distances (up to 10 miles per day) in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift and carry 20–50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing
  • Comfortable working in extreme heat or cold
  • Possible exposure to insects or outdoor environmental conditions

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Support gas construction and replacement programs by coordinating with Engineering, Operations, and local municipalities.
  • Prepare and track work orders, cost estimates, and project documentation.
  • Maintain accurate project and service records in construction databases.

  • Stake proposed gas services & main locations to ensure installations meet company standards.
  • Assist with contractor inspections and audits when requested.
  • Support minor project design activities and field verification.
  • Respond to customer and contractor questions or concerns professionally.
  • Work with customers and municipalities to obtain permits, easements, and rights‑of‑way.
  • Assist Marketing with project design support and customer inquiries.
  • Support additional administrative or business activities as assigned.
