About The Position

Our Melville office is seeking a motivated Project Civil Engineer to join our team working on diverse public and private infrastructure projects for Long Island and Hudson Valley municipalities and State agencies. We are seeking an Project Civil Engineer who will work on infrastructure design projects at our office in Melville, Suffolk County, NY. NV5’s Melville Office operates on a four-day work week. The Project Civil Engineer will work as part of a team of design professionals including Landscape Architects, Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers, and Traffic Engineers to prepare plans and specifications for various municipal projects throughout Long Island and the Hudson Valley. Projects include roadway and highway reconstruction, bicycle paths and trails, downtown streetscapes, suburban parks and recreational facilities, traffic signal design, green infrastructure, pavement markings and signage, and construction administration and inspection.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college
  • Detail-oriented with excellent communication and technical writing skills
  • Proficiency in Autocad Civil 3D, Microsoft Excel
  • EIT certification required
  • 4–8 years of relevant experience in transportation/civil engineering, preferably on public-sector infrastructure projects on Long Island

Nice To Haves

  • Worked previously with Nassau County, Suffolk County and NYSDOT preferred
  • PE certification preferred (but not required)

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor junior staff (1+ engineers) on technical design and project tasks
  • Preparation of design deliverables, including geometric design of intersections, sidewalks, and ADA-compliant elements; trails and greenways; grading/drainage; traffic signals/street lighting; MPT/staging; flood protection; and utility coordination/resolution
  • Drainage system design and private utility coordination
  • Utility conflict identification, resolution, and relocation coordination
  • Coordination with NYSDOT, Nassau /Suffolk Counties, and various Towns, Villages, Private and Utility companies.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously: track progress, prepare/submit progress reports, coordinate with NV5 Project Manager on schedules, budgets, and internal financials
  • Participation in public outreach and client/agency presentations
  • Field work includes data collection, surveys, and construction inspection
  • Construction support, including RFI responses, submittal reviews, and change order evaluations
  • Serve as primary point of contact for client/agency communications, submissions, and stakeholder coordination (including NYSDOT, Nassau County, Suffolk County, Town, Villages, Private Utilities)
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary coordination with in-house teams, subconsultants, and contractors to ensure constructability and contract document integration
  • Contribute to project planning, scope development, quantity/cost estimating, specifications, and quality control reviews
  • Monitor project risks, schedules, and budgets; recommend adjustments to meet deliverables
