About The Position

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Program Support Technician Senior in our Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to: • Retrieving, reviewing, and analyzing criminal records and other documents to independently determine if there are prohibiting factors that prevent potential gun buyers or other recipients of firearms from purchasing or possessing firearms. • Approving or denying firearm purchases requests. • Informing law enforcement on any outstanding warrants of arrest, and/or determining when to transmit immediate administrative message notification(s) to state and local law enforcement agencies of attempts to purchase firearms in circumstances involving protective orders or mental health records. • Documenting research results that support federal disqualification to the possession or transportation of a firearm(s) by inclusion of disqualifying data sets as noted in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Requirements

  • Of data analysis.
  • In using Microsoft Office applications.
  • To apply policies and procedures.
  • To apply research and analytical methodology in the interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information.
  • To write and communicate effectively in English.
  • To respond to inquiries from the public.
  • Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified which requires either United States citizenship or lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Some knowledge or familiarity with accessing and retrieving data from state and federal criminal history databases including VCIN and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) preferred.
  • Criminal Justice experience preferred.
