About The Position

The Calvert County Department of Community Resources, Office on Aging, is seeking a Program Specialist I to lead daily operations at the Southern Pines Senior Center. This role oversees center activities, supervises staff and volunteers, and develops engaging educational, recreational, fitness, and special event programming for older adults. This highly visible position also recruits and manages instructors, ensures a safe and welcoming facility environment, and actively promotes programs to encourage participation and community engagement. Performs specialized program work in the County's programs for older persons. The work involves developing and implementing educational, recreational, leisure activity, and physical fitness programs for participants, including special populations. Position reports to the Aging Services Program Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, recreation, or gerontology or related field.
  • Two years of experience which must include considerable experience managing staff, daily operations, planning/coordinating programs, customer service and policy implementation in a human services/senior citizens setting.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid within the first six months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, recommends and coordinates implementation of recreational, educational, and physical fitness programs, including special populations; monitors and evaluates effectiveness of programs in meeting established goals and objectives; recommends and monitors changes to meet requirements.
  • Plans and oversees a variety of classes (arts, crafts, physical fitness) and special events for older adults; teaches one or more classes.
  • Coordinates room coverage with various instructors, County agencies, and public.
  • Assists with daily meal service operations for the senior nutrition program at center.
  • Inspects facility and ensures order and safety for inside the senior center.
  • Plans, chaperones, collects fees, and keeps records for bus trips.
  • Assists with publication of Office on Aging newsletters.
  • Produces, news releases, posters, and fliers for publicity.
  • Prepares purchase orders for supplies/materials needed for programs/classes.
  • Maintains records of attendance and completes appropriate reports for all classes.
  • Collects fees and maintains financial and attendance records for classes and programs; completes appropriate reports.
  • Directs work of program staff, senior aides, volunteers and contractors.
  • Prepares contracts and paid vouchers for instructors.
  • Works with non-profit board to enhance senior center programs.
  • Advises older adults of available programs and encourages participation.
  • Prepares and submits maintenance requests for repair to building and grounds.
  • Responds to citizen phone calls and email on a daily basis.
  • Types business, thank-you and confirmation letters or memos.
  • Gives facility tours to new participants and visitors.
  • Interacts with Office on Aging staff, Senior Council and outside agencies.
  • Updates Senior Center Bulletin Board(s).
  • Displays participant's Arts & Crafts Projects monthly in display case.
  • Attends meetings, seminars, workshops, and job-related training.
  • Coordinates public and private transportation for trips and special events.
  • Performs related work as required.
