About The Position

East Side House Settlement (ESH) Founded in 1891, s 501 © (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement. Its youth education and technology programs teach skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource, the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional wat to provide economic support to the community we serve. ESH believes that success begins with developing a strong foundation for lifelong learning at an early age. Our efforts to promote early learning include the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Compass Programs. Each year, we serve students in six after-school and expanded day programs during the school year and have additional summer camp programming during the summer. The Program Assistant helps manage the daily operations, planning and scheduling for the Compass and is responsible for creating a community center that is inclusive, welcoming and responsive to the needs of the community by ensuring a continuum of services and youth development programming for families and youth of ESH. They are responsible for supervision of staff and assisting in overall program development, both in-person and virtually.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or equivalent of 3+ years in youth services
  • Familiarity with respective BX communities, key stakeholders and resources
  • Experienced in designing, planning, and implementing structured programs
  • Enjoy being with students and foster their academic, social, emotional, and physical development through the duties outlined above
  • 1+ years of budget, contract and grant management experience
  • High level of proficiency in administrative work
  • Capacity to thrive under pressure while working on multiple tasks and projects
  • Knowledge of the public education system and positive youth development best practices
  • Strong communication skills, writing and organizational skills
  • A team player with demonstrated commitment to working with urban youth and young adults from a strength-based perspective
  • Experienced in DYCD programming regulation and DYCD online
  • Clearance by the Department of Health (DOH)
  • Clearance from the New York State Child Abuse Registry
  • Physical with TB screen
  • Must obtain NYC Dept. of Health fingerprint clearance and State Central Registry (SCR) clearance ($25 fee)
  • Clearance by the Department of Education (DOE)
  • Mandated Reporter Certificate, 2 hours
  • Health & Safety Certificate, 5 hours

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning coordination, and implementation of COMPASS Program
  • Work in tandem with Education Specialist to review and update curriculum, educational objectives, and program design as necessary
  • Prepare and submit reports to program leadership; work with parents, DOE teachers and community providers to ensure a collaborative and supportive team environment
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships through effective and timely communication with the program director, other program personnel, and other building staff members, such as the custodians, and food service personnel
  • Assist with recruitment, hire, train, evaluate, and supervise all COMPASS part-time Youth Educators and Activity Specialists
  • Assist with Annual Evaluation of Staff per ESH evaluation policy procedures and timeframe
  • Assist in registration and oversight of summer jobs programs: SYEP, PSP, LTW, etc.
  • Oversee coordination of programs schedules, calendar, and vacation coverage
  • Oversee development and implementation of daily programming
  • Coordinate regular communication with COMPASS families including newsletters, flyers, events, parent teacher’s night, phone outreach, etc.
  • Conduct parent and parent/child conferences and orientation
  • Develop and support COMPASS staff in the coordination of special events
  • Adhere to policies and procedures in a proactive manner, making the safety and care of children your primary focus.
  • Ensure effective administrative systems are in place to support COMPASS classrooms, and other programming areas are clean and well-maintained
  • Effectively monitor and guide proper student behavior on a continuous basis.
  • Support the emotional and social development of students.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records such as attendance records, snack records, timesheets, incident reports, and all other paperwork as instructed by the program director to ensure program compliance and quality operations
  • Oversee compliance with ESH, DYCD, DOE, and DOH standards
  • Facilitate bi-weekly staff meeting and developed of agenda items
  • Manage supply inventory and submit purchase request as needed to the Program Director for approval
  • Continue professional development by attending department meetings and training as required and as appointed by the senior program director.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Bi-yearly beautification/upgrade projects for the center
  • Performs special projects and/or other duties as needed.
  • Maintain and diligently follow up on facility logs to ensure timely response
  • Ensure facility maintenance and cleanliness and coordinate with partner agencies (NYCHA & DYCD) to address facility issues proactively

  • Experience facilitating live and pre-recorded activities
  • Familiarity using web-based platforms to engage participants: zoom, google classrooms, etc.
  • Monitor participant engagement and safety while on live sessions remotely
  • Facilitate wellness checks/calls to families
  • Follow remote working plan, policies & procedures as highlighted by the supervisor
  • Maintain remote/virtual attendance logs & records
  • Ensure the safety of program staff and participants over remote platforms.
