About The Position

The Cesar E. Chavez Community Action Center, a department of Associated Students, connects San Jose State University students with community service opportunities that deepen the educational experience while promoting the lifelong commitment to civic activism at the heart of the Cesar Chaez legacy. This position works in a collaborative team environment, facilitating volunteers/students at the garden, serving as the key spokesperson for all programs and events to students and working with staff to strengthen daily garden operations. You will be responsible for helping with program and event day planning, record keeping, and leading small groups of volunteers during workdays. This position is ideal for someone who is interested in sustainable gardening practices, and community organizing.

Requirements

  • Must be a fully matriculated student at SJSU.
  • Must be available to work on service program session days which are scheduled on Fridays between 8AM-1PM
  • Candidates MUST NOT hold an active university position, such as a Resident Assistant, that presents a conflict with the required 18-20 hours per week commitment or service program session days (Fridays, 8AM-1PM).
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Child Development, Teaching Preparation, Ethnic Studies, or a related field.
  • Must have experience and knowledge in curriculum development, including the ability to design educational materials that align with program goals.
  • Requires specialized knowledge relevant to K-12 youth programming, informed by current coursework and academic study.
  • Prior experience working with K-12 youth, either as a previous K-12 mentor/participant or through similar volunteer or professional roles.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. as needed for program activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse university environment and collaborate with CCCAC, Associated Students (A.S.), and Student Involvement personnel.
  • Strong independent work ethic, with the ability to take initiative and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in following and interpreting complex written and oral instructions.
  • Capable of managing projects from inception to completion, ensuring organization and efficiency.
  • Skilled in public speaking and facilitation, with the ability to present in classrooms, workshops, and other educational settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Program Assistant for Ongoing Service Program Sembradores
  • Co-develop curriculum for our K-12 service programs targeting the development of elementary school and high school students.
  • Facilitate K-12 service programs at our partner sites, and support the development of San Jose State University students who participate in the program.
  • Support the development of our K-12 program participants.
  • Gather assessment data to measure impact and improve programs.
  • Assist with managing communications between the team and service program participants.
  • Serve as liaison between CCCAC and community partners including K-12 teachers.
  • Manage volunteer recruitment, training, scheduling, reflection, ongoing support and appreciation.
  • Monitor ongoing implementation of the program including participant involvement and issues or challenges that may arise.
  • Represent CCCAC to campus community (students, staff, faculty, leadership) and local community members and organizations via meetings, events, conferences, email communication, etc.; work to build reciprocal partnering relationships
  • Participate in all CCCAC staff meetings and professional development sessions
  • Works with a team to develop and implement a volunteer culture on campus.
  • Contribute to all CCCAC special events and programs.
  • Work in conjunction with all CCCAC staff and Associated Students Board
  • Complete tasks (e.g., errands, flyering, clerical support, research, phone calls, etc.) as assigned.
  • Perform other duties for CCCAC and AS as requested.
  • Participate in summer orientation events if applicable.
