About The Position

The Program Advisor for Virginia Union University TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) supports the academic, college, and career readiness of first-generation and low-income high school students from five target schools within Richmond Public Schools. This role provides hands-on advising, mentorship, and academic support while helping scholars build confidence in STEM and prepare for post-secondary success. The Advisor works closely with the UBMS Director, instructional staff, and community partners to ensure scholars receive consistent academic tracking, enrichment opportunities, and personal development support throughout the academic year and summer academy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required (Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field).
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in student advising, youth development, college access, or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of issues affecting first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and student databases (e.g., Blumen).
  • Must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, and overnight trips.
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Individual Academic Plans (IAPs) for all UBMS scholars.
  • Provide academic, personal, and career advising through one-on-one meetings and group sessions.
  • Conduct regular high school visits to meet with students, counselors, and teachers.
  • Track academic progress and coordinate tutoring or intervention plans as needed.
  • Support students and families in navigating college applications, financial aid, and scholarships.
  • Assist with recruitment, orientation, and onboarding of new participants.
  • Coordinate and supervise Saturday Academy programming, workshops, and tutoring sessions.
  • Help design and facilitate STEM-based enrichment activities, cultural trips, and seminars aligned with UBMS objectives.
  • Serve as a chaperone and mentor during field trips, college tours, and the summer residential academy.
  • Support the planning and delivery of the summer academy, including classes, seminars, and evening activities.
  • Maintain accurate student records and service logs in Blumen or other TRIO-approved databases.
  • Monitor scholar attendance, grades, test scores, and progress toward program objectives.
  • Assist with data collection and preparation for the Annual Performance Report (APR).
  • Ensure program compliance with federal TRIO regulations and university policies.
  • Serve as a liaison between schools, parents, university offices, and community partners.
  • Communicate regularly with families through newsletters, phone calls, and meetings.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
  • Contribute to a positive and inclusive program culture that fosters academic growth and belonging.
