About The Position

The University of New Hampshire College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) invites applications for a tenured faculty position within the College with a leadership role in the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM). CEPS is dedicated to teaching, research, and service in engineering, the physical sciences, computer science, and mathematics within UNH, a land-grant, space-grant, and sea-grant institution. CCOM was founded in 1999 through a cooperative partnership between UNH and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and has since grown to be an internationally recognized leader in research and education in ocean mapping and hydrography. The position will be filled at the rank of full professor within a CEPS academic unit that will be determined based on the qualifications and background of the selected candidate. While teaching is not a required component of the position, the selected candidate may elect, in collaboration with the relevant department chair, to teach classes at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in engineering or physical sciences in a field relevant to hydrographic surveying and ocean mapping.
  • Tenured full professor at an R1 university, preferably a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university
  • Experience leading a large, grant-funded research center.
  • Proven success in procuring competitive research funding within the NOAA appropriation.
  • Experience teaching graduate and undergraduate level classes related to hydrographic surveying and seafloor mapping
  • Proven track record in scientific publication, particularly collaborative publication with colleagues and students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to service responsibilities including institutional, professional, and community contributions including administrative duties, faculty governance, student mentoring, and public outreach.
  • Experience in leading a large (e.g., exceeding $10M expenditures) research program with international recognition)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of, and experience working with, NOAA's National Ocean Service. (NOS)
  • At sea mapping experience, particularly on NOAA hydrographic vessels.
  • Experience with multibeam echosounders, single-beam echosounders, side scan sonar, airborne bathymetric lidar, satellite derived bathymetry, uncrewed systems, and seafloor imaging systems
  • Scientific boating qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior leadership for CCOM, including proposal development, setting research priorities, faculty mentoring, and financial management.
  • Maintain an active research program in ocean and coastal mapping, including advising graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars, and securing research funding from a range of sponsors
  • Engage in impactful national and international activities in seafloor mapping and hydrography, including serving in senior leadership roles on national and international committees and professional organizations
  • Extend active collaboration with the private sector
  • Provide budgetary and operational oversight
  • Mentor CCOM faculty, with a particular focus on mentorship of early-career faculty
  • Work with University leadership on the role of marine science and ocean mapping in the development of the University’s strategic plan
  • Engage in activities in service to the department, college/university, the profession, and the community.
