About The Position

This is an advanced highly responsible professional environmental position requiring knowledge of the Petroleum Contamination Cleanup provisions of Chapter 62-780 and Florida Statute 376, as well as expert level familiarity with the concepts and principles of contamination assessment and remediation, and evaluation of costs associated therewith. The employee in this position will report to the Section/Team Administrator and will be responsible for evaluation of difficult and complex petroleum contaminated sites to provide expert level evaluation and recommendations to progress such sites to closure. The employee will also serve as a senior technical reviewer and provide mentorship and training to other technical staff within the Petroleum Restoration Program (PRP). Responsible for maintaining effective internal and external communications with superiors, co-workers and the public in keeping with the agency’s standards and expectations for communication effectiveness. Manages the technical evaluation of complex sites to develop recommendations for assessment and cleanup activities that support timely site closure. Provides mentorship and technical guidance to PRP staff, including management of federal grants and training staff on site access procedures at airports, ports, railroads, and other specialized facilities. Delivers training on technical aspects of the PRP as well as Petroleum Participation Cleanup Program eligibility requirements and agreement execution processes. Serves as site manager and technical reviewer for high-complexity sites. Communicates with site owners to explain PRP processes and eligibility criteria. Assists with public records responses and contributes to the development of program guidance for assessing petroleum contaminated sites. Acts as a technical lead and mentor to program professionals, supporting their evaluations, professional growth, and training needs. Responds to correspondence and telephone inquiries. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Skilled strongly in Microsoft Excel.
  • Skills in petroleum-based cleanup.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of professionals.
  • Ability to plan and organize a complex workload.
  • Ability to successfully evaluate complex projects for primary program area.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data.
  • At least four (4) years of verifiable related experience. Post-secondary degrees may be used as an alternative for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis. A credential evaluation report from an approved agency must be submitted along with all foreign degrees.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be currently employed with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Must be a licensed Florida Professional Geologist under Chapter 492 F.S.
