About The Position

Duties for the Professional Engineer 1 Civil/Construction, in The Department of State's Division of Building Standards and Codes will include but are not limited to: Provide technical assistance to code enforcement officials, elected officials, building design staff, and other parties with an interest in the Uniform Code, the technical standards referenced therein, and the regulations pertaining to the enforcement thereof. Provide technical assistance to code enforcement officials, elected officials, building design staff, and other parties with an interest in the Uniform Code, the technical standards referenced therein, and the. regulations pertaining to the enforcement thereof. When assigned as a special task, prepare and submit written reports which provide in-depth technical discussion of the underlying safety principals pertaining to selected provisions of the Uniform Code. When assigned as a special task, support regional services technical staff requesting assistance with variance petitions by performing research, evaluation of the subject petition, and preparation of a written summary of findings. When requested, attend hearings to assist the board with questions regarding circumstances associated with the petition. When assigned, represent the Department of State at meetings, speaking engagements, and official functions. Coordinate day-to-day processing and scheduling of applications and fee payments for factory-manufactured home approvals, keeping unit director informed of progress. Assist in maintaining approval files, reports, and accounting records. When assigned, perform on-site factory evaluations of modular building manufacturers for conformance with applicable regulations. Prepare correspondence which communicates nonconformances to the manufacturers and quality assurance agencies. Conducts oneself while on official duty or while reasonably identifiable to the public as an employee of the Department of State with integrity and in a positive and professional manner consistent with state laws, regulations and policies, and Department and Division written policy.

Requirements

  • Permanent service in this title or one year of permanent competitive or 55-B/C service in a title SG-22 or higher and otherwise eligible for transfer under Civil Service Law.
  • A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below; OR a New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.
  • Qualifying degrees: Architectural Engineering, Architectural Engineering Technology, Building Engineering, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Design Engineering, Environmental Resources Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.
  • Qualifying experience: One year of full-time engineering experience related to construction project supervision of the structural and architectural elements of the building.
