About The Position

This Professional Civil Engineer I position is located in Topeka, at the Eisenhower State Office Building, and is within the Bureau of Structures and Geotechnical Services. This position performs administrative and supervisory duties for the Special Bridge Inspection Unit, including coordinating and communicating with others in KDOT, state and federal agencies, consultants, fabricators, contractors, and the public. The Professional Civil Engineer is the lead worker of a Special Bridge Inspection Unit and will coordinate with the Routine Bridge Inspection Engineer to produce inspection reports which are provided to the Office of Chief Counsel and others in KDOT management.

Requirements

  • Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
  • Four years of experience in engineering.
  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Six years of professional experience, with four years of bridge inspection experience and one year of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize civil engineering plans, reports, and calculations.
  • Knowledge of bridge structural analysis and design, hydraulics and hydrology, foundation design, surveying, geometric design, topography, and computer functions.
  • Knowledge of safety aspect of diving, sonic inspection equipment, and structural analysis of fatigue critical details.
  • Management and supervision skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and supervises the inspection activities for the Special Bridge Inspection Unit on bridges and related structures on highway projects.
  • Develops and administers special inspection program for bridges with underwater substructure elements, fracture-critical members, pin-and-hanger expansion joints, and design features that require special inspection techniques.
  • Coordinates with the Routine Bridge Inspection Engineer on annual inspection program.
  • Responsible for the direct supervision of the inspection of members damaged by traffic.
  • Trains and reviews skills to maintain proficiency in diving, electronic equipment, and structural evaluation.
  • Updates records in bridge packets as well as other cards, maps, or listings.
