About The Position

Responsible for a 24/7 heat treat operation including but not limited to department safety, quality, delivery, personnel and equipment. Equipment currently includes belt line furnace, multiple internal quench furnaces, anneal and stress relieving operations, induction hardening, barrel finishing, and shot blast. Ensures materials meet expected properties (surface and core hardness specification and/or case depth).

Requirements

  • Ability to read, and interpret general prints, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to communicate procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of operators and managers
  • Uses intuition and experience to determine furnace programs, Designs workflows and procedures for maximum efficiency. Performs hardness and case depth testing
  • Proactively identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Dispositions non-conforming components and Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem solving situations; Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
  • Pursues training and development opportunities; Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills; Shares expertise with others. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft office, and manufacturing software such as SAP. Forklift license preferred

In addition, associate will be familiar with the Company’s current quality policies, procedures and work instructions that relate to this position.
  • Minimum 3 years of managing a team
  • Minimum 5 years in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of safety practices and protocols related to manufacturing environment and heat treat equipment
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed at times to high levels of noise, heat and occasionally to work near moving mechanical parts and vibration.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, read and communicate electronically and in person. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to walk and stand for long periods of time. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with the Health, Safety, and Environmental policies. Eliminate hazards, participate, and oversee all incident reporting and root cause analysis
  • Directly manages team members assigned to heat treat department including but not limited to schedule, attendance, and performance, corrective action, recruitment, and onboarding.
  • Develop and train operators in proper heat treat processes
  • Work closely with planning and production to set priorities. Attend production meetings. Create production schedules and stage furnaces and induction equipment for efficiency and based on assembly needs.
  • Monitors furnace operations to maintain proper performance, using flow controls, computer controls, analyzing recording data, monitoring burner conditions and devices used to maintain atmospheres, mechanical loading and unloading equipment
  • Measure sample hardness (surface and core) and case depth
  • Ensures equipment is operating correctly and enters work orders for any issues
  • Creates or edits heat treat furnace programs for proper carbon levels, temperature, and load time in coordination with plant metallurgist
  • Disposition non-conforming components and determine rework process
  • Aid in decisions regarding material substitutions/rework
  • Maintain and order department supplies (shot, baskets/grids, quench oil, etc.)
  • Ensure baskets and grids are pulled from service as needed and sent for repair or scrap
  • Pull quench oil samples quarterly for monitoring of oil responsiveness and communicate with laboratory
  • Ensure compliance and assist with adherence to the QMS.
  • Provide guidance to other team members
  • All other duties as required
  • Shut down equipment due to safety or quality concerns
  • Disposition material and make decisions related to the quality of a product in accordance to the quality management system of Renold Morristown
  • Schedule and assign work pertaining to heat treat personnel including overtime
  • Enter requisitions for supplies required for department
  • Directly supervises department employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work, performance appraisals, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Interface closely with planning and production to schedule furnaces
  • Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety and environmental requirements.
  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, departments, or work crew.
  • Manage time and attendance daily.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
