About The Position

SMS Mill Services, LLC, located in Mingo Junction, OH, is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Production Manager to support operations. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing daily production operations to ensure efficiency, quality and safety standards are met. This role manages production staff, monitors workflow, and implements continuous improvement initiatives to meet organizational goals and customer expectations. SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing. We are onsite on JSW’s property.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 5+ years of production or manufacturing leadership experience
  • Strong leadership, communication and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of production planning, quality systems and safety regulations
  • Experience with ERP or production management software preferred
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or varied shifts as needed
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to safety

Responsibilities

  • Manage a production team to achieve optimal safety and productivity as well as service the customer/steel maker.
  • Supervise and motive the team of hourly union employees as well as analyzing daily reports.
  • Meet KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) to meet or exceed efficiency and performance standards.
  • Prepare weekly reports of all the production activities and respond to information requests from site, division and corporate teams as well as customer on site.
  • Manage personnel as appropriate and needed with respect to on-site mill service activities, including: Scrap downloads and blending Scrap breaking, shearing and cutting Rental work with personnel and equipment Environmental services Coolant scrap processing Scrap inspection Barge unloading Rail car repair All other associated activities
  • In conjunction with maintenance, implement and manage a coordinated weekly planned and corrective maintenance schedule, ensuring reliable equipment is maintained to meet production targets and goals.
  • Plan for efficient and effective operations, including compliance with all company policies, practices and procedures, including with respect to spare parts, equipment and other site resource needs.
  • Monitor the production process, including burning rates, equipment downtime and availability and work with the Lead Coordinator to adjust schedule as needed to manage headcounts and payroll expenses.
  • Coordinate, set up and implement standard operating procedure for all production operations.
  • Communicate clearly, including providing on-the-job training and assistance as needed.
  • Implement and drive continuous improvement, including through change management.
  • Ensure all expenses are submitted and authorized prior to any financial commitments and receipts of all goods and services are completed within the correct financial period.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including Environmental, Safety and Health guidelines and best practices, including mitigating risks associated with contractors and vendor insurance and indemnification.
  • Comply with cost savings initiatives, identify and recognize ways to reduce costs and enhance revenue, including treating any company expenses the same as you would if it was your own money.
  • Function as part of the management team and align with core values to meet company policies and goals, escalating and reporting issues that require further assistance as appropriate.
  • Plan, participate and actively contribute to internal and external business meetings as necessary and appropriate.
