About The Position

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Product Sustainability Engineer to join the Starline Team in Canonsburg, PA. The Product Sustainability Engineer plays a central role in advancing Starline’s product sustainability strategy by integrating sustainability considerations into product development and lifecycle management. This role collaborates cross-functionally to gather high‑quality data, define product‑level sustainability requirements, and build tools that guide eco‑design and decarbonization decisions. The engineer develops and maintains environmental performance models, supports transparency initiatives such as Product Environmental Profiles and LEED documentation, and identifies opportunities to reduce embodied carbon and product-use impact. By translating sustainability goals into actionable product insights, the role strengthens transparency, reduces environmental impacts, and ensures Starline products align with evolving customer and market expectations. This role directly shapes the environmental performance of Starline’s product portfolio and helps position the company as a sustainability leader in its industry.

Requirements

  • Minimum BS in a technically related degree. Specific experience may serve to offset education.
  • 2-4 years’ relevant experience. Has obtained general industry experience that complements a broad base.
  • Applied understanding of key sustainability frameworks and standards (including SBTi for science‑based climate targets and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for emissions accounting), with the ability to apply them at a granular level to drive product‑level sustainability improvements and support alignment with emerging reporting standards such as CSRD/ESRS and ISSB.
  • Strong understanding of sustainability frameworks and certifications (e.g., ISO 14025, EN 15804, LEED, WELL).
  • Experience with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools (e.g., EIME, SimaPro, GaBi) and sustainability data platforms.
  • Solid project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities across departments.
  • Familiarity with engineering documentation, drawings, BOMs, and change control processes.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and data visualization/reporting tools.
  • Broad understanding of engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes, with the ability to translate sustainability insights into practical design recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and be able to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 25lbs.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, as required, up to 10% of the time.
  • The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to the manufacturing areas where, under certain areas, the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and mandatory hearing protection are required.

Responsibilities

  • Strengthen Starline’s product transparency and reduce embodied and use-phase carbon through robust data systems, disclosures, and eco-design integration:
  • Product Environmental Profiles (PEP) modeling
  • Eco-design support
  • Single-use plastic elimination
  • LEED/WELL packages
  • Packaging EPR / PPWR
  • Product-level Scope 3 data collection
  • Coordinate sustainability data across Starline, ensuring accurate collection, communication, reporting, and timely responses to internal and external requests.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement design-related solutions to reduce waste, conserve energy, and minimize environmental impacts.
  • Identify and pilot new tools, methods, and design strategies that enhance product sustainability.
  • Manage relationships with external environmental consultants, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain sustainability awareness by working as an audit member of LNCA Product Sustainability & Compliance Committee, sharing information, findings and requirements across the Starline business.
  • Participate in the ECN/ECR process to ensure sustainability attributes are considered in product and material changes.
