Product Manager

SM-Energy CompanyDenver, CO

About The Position

As a Technical Product Manager, you will serve as the critical architect of value between our business operations and our internal development team. You will lead the lifecycle of proprietary software solutions—ensuring that lines of code translate into measurable operational uplift. Your experience in oil and gas—spanning field operations, production, drilling, or land—will enable you to translate complex workflows into scalable digital solutions. You aren't just a "backlog manager"; you are a change agent who understands that a tool is only successful if your key stakeholders (such as the field engineers and landmen) actually use it.

Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years in Product Management, specifically within the Oil & Gas industry. Experience with in-house software development (SaaS or proprietary internal tools) is required. Prior experience with project management.
  • Agile Expertise: Proven track record of working in Agile/Scrum environments. Ability to pivot quickly when operational priorities shift.
  • The "Translator" Ability: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence without authority. You must be as comfortable in a board room as you are in a field office.
  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to look at a complex operational bottleneck and visualize a digital solution that is both scalable and user-friendly.

Nice To Haves

  • The "User-First" Edge: Experience in UI/UX design or wireframing (using tools like Figma or Adobe XD) is a significant plus. You understand that for an engineer or landman, "simple is better than complex."
  • Human-Centric Design: Ability to conduct user journey mapping to identify friction points in current workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Discovery & Requirements Gathering: Partner with stakeholders across Drilling, Completions, Operations, and Land to translate complex workflows into functional technical specifications.
  • Agile Product Leadership: Own the product roadmap. Prioritize the backlog based on ROI, safety, and strategic alignment. Lead sprint planning, grooming, and reviews in a fast-paced environment.
  • Stakeholder & Change Management: Act as the primary point of contact for leadership and end-users. Develop and execute change management plans, including user training, documentation, and feedback loops to ensure high adoption rates.
  • High-Touch Communication: Bridge the gap between "data science speak" and "field speak." Provide regular, transparent updates to executive leadership on project milestones, risks, and production impacts.
  • Data-Driven Validation: Define and track KPIs for in-house tools (e.g., production uplift percentages, reduction in manual data entry hours, or lease acquisition speed).

Benefits

  • SM Energy offers competitive compensation and benefits programs which include, but are not limited to, variable pay, health care coverage, retirement plan, protection coverage, time off and leave programs, training and development opportunities and a range of allowances connected to specific work situations.
