About The Position

We are looking for a Product Compliance Engineer to join the team! This role will be hybrid, with a weekly schedule based out of our Calabasas office Essential Job Description: This role will be responsible for ensuring that our consumer electronics products comply with U.S. and worldwide standards for electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), intentional radiators and hazardous substance restrictions. Equipment to be certified includes a broad range of analog/digital signal processing & musical instrument products, including effects processors, audio amplifiers, computer interfaces, 2.4GHz wireless transmitters/receivers, guitars, external power supplies, etc. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Electrical Engineering, the Product Compliance Engineer will work closely with the development teams and Project Management during all stages of the product development cycle. This is a critical position in a creative, fun, and driven work environment. Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills, project management skills, and experience driving products through the certification process (from development to launch) for all appliable product compliance requirements (i.e. Safety, EMC, etc). Additionally, candidates must have experience with product compliance requirements for MME (Multi-Media Equipment) products - IEC/UL 62368-1, CISPR 32/35, and experience guiding design team to ensure products are designed to meet product compliance requirements. Experience with Cyber Security and testing EMC for pre-compliance is also highly desired.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on EMI/EMC/safety compliance testing and related engineering and documentation experience.
  • B.S. in Engineering (Electrical preferred), M.S. a plus.
  • Direct experience obtaining international certifications for hardware products.
  • Experience with a variety of international standards and Nationally Recognized Test Labs (NRTLs), including: UL, CE, CSA, FCC, ETL, PSE, CCC, TUV, Nemko, INMETRO, etc.
  • Knowledgeable in the latest EMI/EMC/safety regulatory test requirements for both the U.S. and the rest of the world.
  • Experience with environmental standards and regulations, including WEEE, RoHS, REACH, and TSCA. This should include a thorough understanding of the documentation required to meet these standards.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize all assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • A self-starter and self-motivated with the ability to complete work assignments in a fast-paced environment based on broad directions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of individuals, to evaluate situations and to respond quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working for a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory and/or a certification agency is a plus.
  • Experience performing pre-compliance testing for MME products for EMC and IEC/UL 62368-1 is highly desired.
  • Experience with Cyber Security and testing EMC for pre-compliance is also highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all hardware products are safe, legal and fully compliant with all worldwide regulations.
  • Work closely with development teams to ensure new hardware designs comply with all relevant standards and requirements. Also participate in design reviews with an eye towards design-for-compliance and ensure that compliance issues do not negatively affect product launch dates.
  • Serve as subject matter expert regarding compliance requirements and provide necessary guidance to design teams regarding the interpretation of requirements.
  • Work with the test and regulatory agencies to prepare and provide all necessary documentation and product submissions. Also, oversee submissions through the approval process and file all necessary documentation.
  • Identify specific language required on boxes, labels, artwork, etc. to ensure worldwide compliance.
  • Work with Supply Chain to ensure all chemical compliance requirements (e.g., RoHS, REACH, Prop 65, etc.) are met.
  • Maintain compliance technical files, provide advance notice of expiring certificates, and successfully achieve certification renewals without disruption of sales.
  • Maintain a compliance matrix which identifies applicable standards and requirements for all countries.
  • Provide budgetary estimates for all compliance requirements, and work with Sales and Finance to help identify the associated costs for obtaining compliance in specific countries.
  • Partner with Yamaha's corporate compliance group and remain informed of all changes in various worldwide regulatory compliance requirements and proactively inform the design teams of any related impending requirements.
  • Manage the compliance approvals for special projects (such as opening new distributors, changing critical components in existing designs, integrating new external power supplies, etc.).
  • Create compliance testing/certification strategies to minimize cost and maximize efficiency.
