About The Position

The Problem Gambling Counselor with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) specialization is responsible for providing counseling and support to individuals struggling with both problem gambling and substance use issues. This position requires a deep understanding of addiction and a commitment to helping clients on their path to recovery. The counselor will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with other professionals to provide comprehensive treatment and support services.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field.
• Must possess or ascertain State licensure or certification as a counselor or therapist, with a specialization in addiction counseling.
• Experience in providing counseling services to individuals with problem gambling and SUD.
• Must pass a pre-employment background check.
• Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
• Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
• Knowledge of federal confidentiality laws, 42 CFR, protects client confidentiality/anonymity, and assures no information is shared without proper authorization.
• Knowledge of Substance Use Disorder Professional will utilize the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) patient placement diagnostic criteria.
• Ability to comply with the State of Washington (WAC) code guidelines as mandated in all treatment activities.
• Ability to facilitate and structure group therapy and individual counseling sessions and provide Relapse Prevention Group.
• Ability to provide educational presentations related to chemical dependency, behavioral health Choice Theory/Reality Therapy and Rational Emotional Behavior Therapy (REBT).
• Provide treatment modification on a quarterly basis.
• Ability to maintain current continuing education and state licensing/registration requirements as per Chapter 18.205 RCW and WAC 246-12-170 and for pursuing continuing education and certification in Choice Theory/Reality Therapy training.
• Ability to coordinate clinical activities with treatment team and other staff.
• Facilitate transfers to outside treatment agencies.
• Skills for maintenance, security, and completeness of active and inactive files, to include securing appropriate background information from other agencies and institutions, filing case material as it is received, recording interview summaries and activities of the client, and all other pertinent information.
• Knowledge of evidence-based treatment modalities for addiction.
• Ability of strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must have empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach to clients.
• Ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate with other professionals.

Responsibilities

• Assessment and Diagnosis: Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate the severity and nature of problem gambling and substance use issues in clients.
• Utilize standardized assessment tools to diagnose problem gambling and SUD.
• Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment results.
• Counseling and Therapy: Provide individual and group counseling to clients with co-occurring problem gambling and SUD.
• Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), to address addiction-related issues.
• Foster a therapeutic alliance and create a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to explore their challenges.
• Education and Support: Educate clients about problem gambling and substance use disorders, including the risks and consequences.
• Offer guidance and support for clients in developing coping strategies and relapse prevention plans.
• Assist clients in accessing resources and support services in the community.
• Monitoring and Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, including progress notes, treatment plans, and assessment reports.
• Regularly evaluate clients' progress and make adjustments to treatment plans as necessary.
• Comply with all legal and ethical standards related to client confidentiality and record-keeping.
• Collaboration: Collaborate with other members of the treatment team, including psychiatrists, social workers, and addiction specialists, to provide comprehensive care.
• Attend team meetings and case conferences to discuss client progress and treatment strategies.
• Continuing Education: Stay current with the latest research and best practices in problem gambling and SUD treatment.
• Pursue professional development opportunities and maintain necessary certifications and licenses.
