As the Private Bank Underwriting & PM Director, you will manage a team of Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts, including those who manage straightforward up to the most complex credits, and including those with large exposures in complicated and/or specialized industries (CRE, C&I, PE/VC). You will be intensely involved in credit actions and will be responsible for all aspects of portfolio management, actively ensuring compliance with federal regulations and Citizens policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related discipline; Masters Degree preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting or leading Private Bank, Wealth Management, or Specialty Lending portfolios, including high-net-worth or complex relationship structures.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in commercial or private banking credit, underwriting, and portfolio management, including management of complex, non-investment grade credit exposures.
  • People leadership experience, including managing, developing, and performance-managing Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound credit judgment and independently approve or recommend credit decisions within established authority. Track record of achieving satisfactory or better results in credit review, audit, and regulatory examinations.
  • Experience overseeing quality control, workflow prioritization, and timely completion of credit reviews, risk ratings, covenant monitoring, and annual reviews. Proven success designing or enhancing credit processes, monitoring frameworks, and policy initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively with relationship managers, credit risk partners, senior leadership, and external clients.  Demonstrated ability to negotiate deal structures and resolve complex client needs.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal banking regulations, credit policy, risk governance, and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all aspects of portfolio management including transaction structuring, due diligence and underwriting, credit approval, legal documentation review & negotiation, reporting/credit monitoring and problem loan identification.
  • Intensively involved in credit actions (deal screens, approval of new business and amendment requests and Watchlist) on a credit intensive, noninvestment grade portfolio.
  • Designs and monitors internal systems to assure that all assigned work and ongoing monitoring is completed on a timely basis and in a manner that complies with all Citizens internal policies.
  • Actively ensures compliance with federal regulations and Citizens policies. Involved in assessing, developing, and implementing credit and compliance policies.
  • Prioritizes work that is assigned to the group, assures that work is appropriately distributed among the team members and is responsible for objective quality control of group’s analytical and reporting work product to include accurate application of credit, risk, and other policies and practices required to effectively manage risk exposure and loss to Citizens.
  • Assures that all portfolio managers & credit analysts are trained and kept up to date on Citizens credit policy as well as credit issues affecting the general economy.
  • Achieves satisfactory or better ratings from credit review and compliance and meet compliance targets for annual reviews, risk ratings, and covenant compliance monitoring.
  • Responsible for performance management process and professional development of direct reports.
  • Liaise with regional portfolio management team Leader, credit risk and workout colleagues on deteriorating credits. Largely internally focused interacting with portfolio managers, relationship managers, division executives, credit officers and Senior Management.
  • Externally meets with customers/prospects to actively negotiate deals and solve customer/prospect requests and problems.
