Sony Corporation of America (SCA) is seeking an Attorney, Privacy to join the Sony Group Corporation Digital Transformation group’s Data Enablement team for an excellent opportunity to join our team. This position will be based in the San Diego, Culver City, or San Mateo office. This position may require travel to the San Diego, Culver City, or San Mateo offices as required (approximately once per month). This position will report to the Sr Counsel/Privacy Officer, Sony Group Corporation, Privacy Section and be a part of the team responsible for establishing and maintaining an enterprise vision, strategy and program to secure Sony’s information assets, services, and the products that depend on them, thus, building trust with customers and stakeholders, and protecting the privacy of Sony’s customers and employees. This position is a hybrid role requiring 2 days per week in the office in San Diego, LA, or San Mateo.

  • Initiates and conducts efforts aimed at promoting and ensuring compliance with global privacy rules and other privacy program requirements, with a focus on future technologies (including data transformation initiatives, such as cross-group affiliate data sharing and customer marketing, account consolidation/unified ID).
  • Consult and coordinate with Sony group legal departments (and outside counsel as needed) regarding local legal requirements, including regulatory filings for international data protection authorities and consultations with European Works Councils, in collaboration with Sr Counsel/Privacy Officer.
  • Works in partnership with appropriate teams to enhance governance, controls, and documentation, and address findings.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable privacy laws, regulations, and standards, and monitors advancements in information privacy technologies.
  • Provides advice, conducts privacy impact assessments, and support across the company, as a privacy subject matter expert.
  • Supports the Sr. Counsel (Privacy Officer), Privacy Section with reporting on global privacy projects and initiatives.
  • Honesty, trustworthiness and ethical conduct are material requirements for the responsibilities outlined above
  • A J.D. degree and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
  • Must have between 5-8 years of related, practical legal experience working in a law firm or corporate environment; this includes direct experience applying U.S. and non-U.S. privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines in a business context.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ demonstrable experience in operationalizing data privacy experience. This could have been in a compliance, legal, information security, information technology or consulting capacity.
  • Experience drafting privacy compliance language and documentation for consumer products or services.
  • Experience providing practical advice on privacy enhancing technologies, such as through privacy impact assessments for consumer products or services.
  • Exceptional communication and advocacy skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to express complex and technical issues as understandable language within Sony, and with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborative, team player.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of executives.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously, with strong ability to prioritize multiple. tasks and respond to emergencies, organize and schedule work effectively.
  • Ability to travel internationally as required, up to 20%.
  • Eligible to work unrestricted in the United States.
  • In-house experience in a multinational corporation or top tier law firm strongly preferred.
  • Practical, hands-on privacy experience, and certifications such as CIPP or CIPT strongly preferred.
  • Involvement in global cross-company privacy programs and/or initiatives, including GDPR.
