About The Position

Coppin State University, a fully accredited institution and a member of the University System of Maryland, is accepting applications for a Print Designer Technician in the Division of Administration and Finance. Founded in 1900, Coppin is an urban, residential, historically black university offering 32 undergraduate majors, 14 graduate majors, and 15 certificate programs and 1 doctoral program; nearly 3,000 students are enrolled in day, evening, on-line, and weekend undergraduate and graduate courses. Reporting to the Manager, Mail and Print Services, the Print Designer/Technician performs moderately complex assignments pertaining to graphic production and presentation of instructional, informational, and promotional projects. Assists in analyzing project objectives and determines graphic and production requirements. Creates illustrations and typography for visual communications media. Additionally, the person in this role also performs routine work in the operation of printers and multifunctional equipment for the production of printed materials.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION Bachelor's degree in art, graphics design, or illustration.
  • EXPERIENCE One year progressively responsible experience as a graphic artist.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES General knowledge of graphic design, illustrative procedures and the application of visual design to print and multimedia.
  • Knowledge of printing, typography, and other graphic production processes.
  • Knowledge of art production methods, of layout and design of publications.
  • Ability to coordinate graphics design projects.
  • Ability to understand and to interpret information in a visual manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate computer graphic systems and software.
  • Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-to-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and reviews layout, sketches of proposed illustrations and related materials with the client and determines style, techniques and medium best suited to produce desired effects.
  • Coordinates projects from conception to completion.
  • Operates standard printing, copying, and finishing equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance on printing machines according to prescribed procedures.
  • Cleans, adjusts, and makes minor repairs and packages as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains production records and inventory of print supplies.
  • Performs material handling activities such as supplies and cases of paper, loading and unloading printing equipment and stocking shelves.
  • Other duties as assigned.
