About The Position

WOW! is currently hiring a Principle Core Network Engineer! For work from home positions, employees can sit in one of the following states: AL, AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, IN, MI, OH, SC, TN and TX. The Principal Core Network Engineer functions as a senior level leader and provides oversight to the networking team in support of WOW!’s data products through technical leadership and consulting across the organization. This role will develop and maintain the high-level design/strategy plan for the overall logical and technical architecture for the Backbone networks. Let us tell you about the perks! Requirements

• Minimum Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, preferred or equivalent work experience.
• Skills and Abilities to be Successful in this Role 6+ years’ experience in ISP environment and 7+ years’ experience in designing network architectures
• Expert routing knowledge required in OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, RSVP-TE and multicast
• Extensive network engineering and architecture experience - excellent understanding of Internet and datacenter topologies
• Extensive experience in evaluating, configuring, and troubleshooting network hardware, particularly Juniper, Arista, Cisco — with a deep understanding of hardware architecture and platform nuances
• Thorough understanding of various L2/L3 protocols and technologies: TCP/IP (v4 & v6) and related protocols, multicast, MPLS-based services, QOS, BFD, LACP, VRRP, STP, etc
• Understanding of Layer 4-7 switching/load balancing and application integration
• Strong grasp of network security protocols, policies, and best practices
• Able to investigate new technologies, develop scalable network solutions, and create successful business cases to propose new configurations, architectures, services, and policies
• Analytical approach to problem solving and usage of methodical & documented processes to propose network enhancements
• Experience in a production environment supporting mission-critical, Internet-facing services
• Ability to perform necessary mathematical functions and calculations related to network design, planning and performance
• Regularly required to talk and hear
• Required to use hands to type, handle objects and paperwork
• Required to use close vision and be able to focus

Nice To Haves

• Advanced industry certifications: JNCIE, CCIE-SP, or equivalent preferred
• Experience with optical transport/DWDM technologies preferred
• Familiarity with network automation (Python, Ansible, Terraform) preferred
• Proficient with Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

• Generates conceptual, logical, and physical network architectures.
• Lead the creation of detailed documentation, test analyses, risk assessments, and design strategies to ensure robust and future-proof architectures
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship across the engineering team, guiding research, design, and development of backbone network solutions
• Research and analyze the most complex data, voice, and video network and hardware problems and provide recommendations for solution
• Develop and maintain a road map for capabilities, operations and technologies
• Determine methods and procedures to be implemented and used on complex new technologies to enhance performance.
• Proactively identify opportunities to increase backbone network reliability and reduce costs
• Research and evaluate emerging technologies to ensure solutions remain aligned with industry standards and innovation trends
• Participate in evaluating complex data, voice, or video networking technologies to understand their potential and recommend future direction
• Evaluate cost analyses and vendor comparisons for large-scale projects to ensure cost-effective and efficient operations, and measures feasibility of various approaches
• Revise model and budgetary guidelines as appropriate and in conjunction with engineering leadership to ensure company and client needs are met
• Recommend complex investment decisions to management and internal customers based on results of independent assessment of current and future data network performance, stability, and network management issues
• Design network solutions, perform lab testing, document HLDs and LLD, support handing off to core implementation team
• Work with other engineering teams to ensure detailed designs are deployable, and able to be operated with minimal impacts to customers, and operating expenses
• Work with vendor partners to ensure engineering requirements are aligned with product roadmaps
• Act as a mentor and provide oversight to junior network engineering staff and implementation engineering.
