Amazon Special Projects team is seeking an accomplished North American energy-sector leader to join a small, high-impact Special Projects team that incubates and launches new strategic businesses for Amazon, Reporting directly to the General Manager of the initiative, you will serve as the team's subject-matter expert and trusted strategic advisor on the highly regulated and relationship-driven U.S. power and utilities landscape. This role is part of an Amazon Special Projects team that amplifies the company’s Think Big leadership principle. You'll engage directly with utility C-suite executives and regulators, navigate complex rate cases and procurement processes, and translate intricate regulatory constraints into actionable business strategies. Expect to craft compelling executive narratives, lead partnership negotiations, and collaborate across legal, finance, and technical teams. You'll balance external relationship building (with ~25% domestic travel) with internal strategy development, always working backwards from real-world constraints to unlock new opportunities. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10+ years of professional or military experience
  • 10+ years of solving problems with technology in the Energy & Utilities industries experience
  • 7+ years of developing, negotiating and executing business agreements experience
  • Experience developing strategies that influence leadership decisions at the organizational level
  • Experience in regularly interacting with senior management on matters concerning several areas, divisions, and/or customers
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements with a firm understanding of legal terminology and reasoning
  • Experience influencing innovation through a partner ecosystem with either solutions or programs that have demonstrated success at enterprise customers
  • 10+ years of regulatory frameworks and policy analysis methodologies experience
  • 10+ years in the North American energy industry in senior roles at major utilities, regulatory bodies, OEMs, or top-tier consultancies
  • Experience relationship building and influencing at the C-level of Fortune 500 customers

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a founder or executive focused on related segments, or as a practice leader or business unit owner
  • Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
  • Experience across at least one industry vertical (manufacturing, energy, oil & gas, etc.)
  • Master's degree or above in management, business administration, economics, engineering, marketing
  • 15+ years in senior or executive energy industry roles
  • Former C-suite or leadership position at a utility, regulatory commission, or major energy association
  • Deep knowledge of grid-edge orchestration, virtual power plants, DER aggregation, data monetization, or decarbonization-as-a-service

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the expert on North American energy regulation, utility operating models, rate-making, procurement, and the broader ecosystem (IOUs, public power, co-ops, ISOs/RTOs, regulators)
  • Leverage senior-level relationships across utilities, commissions, FERC, DOE, and industry bodies to accelerate strategic engagements and establish credibility
  • Lead business development—identifying, negotiating, and closing design partnerships, pilots, and revenue-generating agreements with utilities
  • Translate complex regulatory and operational constraints into product strategy, commercial models, and go-to-market sequencing
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with system integrators, technology vendors, and industry organizations
  • Author executive-level narratives and strategic recommendations that distill energy-sector complexity into clear insights
  • Partner with corporate development, legal, finance, and technical teams to establish compliance frameworks tailored to the energy sector
