This engineering position requires strong technical and leadership skills to support the design and development of innovative, new products within the Cardiac and Vascular Group. The Principal Systems Engineer will apply knowledge of systems engineering and experience in working on complex multidisciplinary problems and will provide leadership of projects from early phase development to market release. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects. This position will be located in Mounds View, MN. The candidate will be responsible for leading system engineering activities with the goal to define, verify, and validate CRDN systems through the integration of sub-systems, features, and technologies. These activities include a) identification of customer needs, b) system definition by translating customer needs into engineering requirements, c) system architecture, partitioning, and development, d) technical risk management activities, e) system verification and validation, and f) system support and education. Systems Engineering activities typically involve trade-offs between risks, benefits, and performance. Systems Engineering activities are performed within the constraints of a complex regulatory environment, in partnership with development (software, firmware, hardware, mechanical engineering), research, clinical, regulatory, product planning, and marketing groups. A key focus of this role will be to lead the design and development of the system architecture for a next generation Renal Denervation RF ablation generator. Tasks include: Owns the decisions for the systems team that drives the architecture and is responsible for the modeling and theory of operation. Perform technical planning, system design and architecture, evaluates alternatives including cost and risk, supportability and analyses for total systems. Lead technical architecture activities to drive complete system definition, establish performance metrics, and define system interfaces across program and platforms. Provide input to integration planning and test execution across electrical, mechanical, and software. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Define and/or review requirements for medical device systems that meet the expectations and uses of the customer, regulatory agencies, and the business. Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. Perform/participate in Risk Analysis activities, such as FMEAs and Hazard Analyses, for systems, features, and implementations with the intent to eliminate or mitigate the risks in the identified scenarios. Provide guidance, coaching, and training to other employees within job area. Establish and advocate for best practices and continuous improvement to mature Systems Engineering knowledge and processes. Champion consistent implementation of the Quality System across projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related degree program required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR PhD with 3 years relevant experience.

  • The ideal candidate will have depth in one or more of the following areas: understanding, defining, and designing to use cases extensive catheterization lab experience experience with requirement management/ A&PLM tools biomedical sensors, software development, wireless communications
  • The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills and the capability to make trade-offs between risks, benefits, and performance.
  • Understanding and experience in design, development, and testing of embedded, electro-mechanical medical devices.
  • Understanding and experience with developing Test Methods and Test Equipment
  • Experience with general electronic bench test equipment: oscilloscopes, DMM’s, Data Acquisition devices
  • Experience with IEC 60601-1
  • Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering
  • Experience with Minitab, Python, R, or Power BI for statistics and data analysis
  • Experience with capital equipment
  • Experience with cyber security
  • Experience with product concept development, customer interaction, systems engineering, verification of engineering requirements, and validation of customer needs/design requirements
