About the team: The Principal Software Engineer, Payments, serves as a strategic technical leader driving the design, architecture, and scalability of Turo’s global payment systems. This role blends deep technical expertise with strong cross-functional influence, partnering closely with product, accounting, finance, and legal teams to ensure compliance, accuracy, and operational excellence across all payment flows. The ideal candidate is an expert in building resilient, secure, and high-volume payment platforms, capable of guiding architectural decisions and mentoring senior engineers to deliver long-term solutions. Evaluates technical designs for high-impact projects and advises teams to improve execution. Collaborates across teams and disciplines to solve problems and resolve technical debates. Stays aware of changes to the company to anticipate and prevent obstacles from hindering team performance. Mentors other senior and staff engineers and partners with managers on strategy, collaboration, influence, execution, and other aspects of leadership. Participates in hiring; partnering with recruiters to align on candidate profiles, guiding and filling open engineering positions to improve efficiency in hiring pipelines. Expected to possess deep technical domain knowledge of Turo, including DevOps adoption, to understand Turo’s infrastructure, system architecture, and build and deployment environments such that they can address critical issues in a timely fashion. Other duties as assigned.
