About The Position

Venturi Astrolab, Inc. (Astrolab) is pioneering new ways to explore and operate on distant planetary bodies. We are focused on designing, building, and operating a fleet of multi-purpose commercial planetary rovers to extend and enhance humanity’s presence in the solar system. We are seeking motivated, creative, and exceptional people to join our team. The Avionics team is responsible for the electrical systems and hardware of Astrolab’s electric rover vehicles and ground support equipment. We work collaboratively across teams to deliver exceptionally capable, reliable electronics that support our missions. The Principal Mixed Signal Electrical Engineer will lead the development and testing of avionics hardware for Astrolab rovers. The ideal candidate has 15+ years of experience in mixed signal electrical hardware design, including schematic capture, PCB layout, analysis, and test in high-reliability environments. This position reports to the Director of Avionics Engineering and is based in our Hawthorne, CA office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 15+ years of experience in power, digital, and analog electronics design, including schematic capture, PCB layout, analysis, and testing
  • Design proficiency with voltage regulators, FPGAs, SoCs, high-speed data interfaces, precision analog instrumentation, and clocking architectures
  • Skilled at schematic capture and layout of complex PCBs
  • Skilled at performing circuit simulations and analysis in SPICE, Excel, and other tools for analog behavior, signal integrity, size and mass, and power optimization
  • Proficiency with basic electronic lab equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, DMMs, signal generators, and soldering tools
  • Demonstrated success operating with ownership in a dynamic environment

Responsibilities

  • Support avionics system architecture and requirements development, analysis, and trade studies
  • Own mixed signal PCBA development from a clean sheet through qualification and flight
  • Develop PCBA requirements, architectures, and con-ops in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams
  • Perform schematic capture and PCB layout of complex power, digital, and analog circuit PCBAs using Altium Designer
  • Perform circuit analysis, including power integrity, signal integrity, SWaP optimization, tolerance analysis, and reliability assessments
  • Lead PCBA design verification testing, qualification testing, and system integration testing
  • Lead design reviews for interdisciplinary audiences, clearly communicating tradeoffs and design intent
  • Support manufacturing, integration, and flight operations as needed
  • Design for space environments, including radiation impacts, mitigation strategies, and long-duration reliability considerations.
