About The Position

The Principal Engineer is a management level position in the Engineering Department and is responsible for directing and supervising the professional engineering work for the Department. The Principal Engineer is responsible for the management, development, and professional growth of the Department teams and individual staff. Duties will include managing and administering various Department activities, programs, and projects. The Principal Engineer provides expertise in the areas of project planning, coordination, and supervision of design and construction of public works projects, including roadway, utility and/or structural projects, and possesses the following skills: Successful track records of local public works agency clients’ relations, project management, and business development. Lead selected projects within technical areas of expertise and broad experience in working with local public works agencies. Ability to work effectively with others to manage and deliver projects. Mentor staff and track staff professional development. Be active in professional public works organizations or other industry groups.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of progressive engineering experience plus 5+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Current California Professional Engineer License is required. Specialty certifications are highly desired.
  • Proven success managing public works projects with strong client relations.
  • Experience with making presentations and leading team meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Structural Design Only – Proven track record for successfully completing structural design projects – e.g. bridges, retaining wall, box culverts, water tanks, overhead signs and other non-building structures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Project or any other project management software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and supervise teams of engineers for preparation of plans, specifications and estimates for public works projects.
  • Direct engineering staff to perform complex engineering works and ensure technical competence and compliance with governing regulations.
  • Develop and monitor project budget and schedule to ensure timely project delivery.
  • Reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations for and/or approve contracts with clients and subconsultants, contract modifications, specifications, related documents, and settlement of claims.
  • Coordinate project activities with all stakeholders, other consultants and contractors.
  • Advise clients on applicable funding options and technical matters.
  • Work closely with clients and group leads to ensure compliance with agencies’ adopted policies and project goals.
  • Resolve differences among engineers to ensure effective functioning of engineering activities.
  • Represent and cultivate a positive image of the firm with clients, professional organizations and engineering community.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
