About The Position

AtkinsRéalis is looking for a highly skilled and motivated Principal Design Engineer within the Orlando, Florida area to oversee and manage complex transportation design projects with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (Master's preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Florida is required.
  • Minimum 15 years of post-licensure experience in roadway design, with significant experience on FDOT District 5 projects.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), and FDOT CADD standards.
  • Strong understanding of FDOT design processes, including Design-Build and traditional delivery methods.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and client management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with FDOT's Basis of Estimates, Standard Plans, and Structures Manual.
  • Ability to lead QA/QC reviews and mentor junior engineers.
  • Experience with MOT analysis, drainage design, and geometric design.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in marketing efforts, including client meetings, presentations, and proposal development for FDOT design projects.
  • Represent AtkinsRéalis at industry events, conferences, and professional organizations to enhance visibility and promote capabilities.
  • Collaborate with business development teams to craft winning strategies for FDOT pursuits, including Design-Build and traditional delivery methods.
  • Oversee design and delivery of roadway projects with FDOT, including limited-access highways, arterials, and urban reconstruction.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) for major FDOT design contracts, ensuring compliance with FDOT standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Manage multidisciplinary design teams, providing technical guidance, mentoring, and quality assurance.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with FDOT staff, local agencies, and industry partners to identify upcoming opportunities and position the firm for success.
  • Oversee the preparation of design documents including typical sections, horizontal and vertical alignments, drainage, MOT plans, and pavement design reports.
  • Stay current with FDOT manuals, CADD standards, and design criteria including OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and other relevant software.
