About The Position

Deliver high quality recreation services for residents, visitors and the St. Charles community by adhering to the District’s safety and administrative policies and procedures. This position is well suited for someone who is friendly, energetic, and interested in assisting and engaging children in interactive recreational and educational activities. Must be willing to work with livestock, including large animals. Should be able to work and communicate effectively with campers, parents, and farm staff. Must be available for the entire 9-week farm camp program.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • A strong background in education/childcare/coaching, knowledge of face-to-face program delivery, and a valid driver’s license.
  • Work/volunteer record that shows reliability, initiative, and good interpersonal skills.
  • Must have or complete Mandated Reporter and CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire date (training provided by district).
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of higher education in the field of education, recreation, or similar is preferred with at least one year of experience in a related field.
  • A minimum of one year in a supervisory role and one year as a day camp counselor or similar position preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park District’s safety and risk management program.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents, colleagues, the public, PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
  • Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
  • Comply with Park District policies and administrative procedures.
  • Possess and exhibit the desire to work with children and the ability to interact with children in a positive manner
  • Serve as a Park District representative, provide leadership and work effectively with the general public, program participants, parents, other facility users, and fellow employees.
  • Assist full-time staff with pre-season planning including creation of weekly and daily schedules, coordinating field trips, processing paperwork, etc.
  • Work with parents, resolve problems and deal with individuals and situations in a respectful, positive, sensitive and mature manner.
  • Apply appropriate positive discipline techniques with children and provide training of the same to counselors.
  • Maintain safeguards over protected, privileged or confidential information, verbal and written, to prevent unauthorized disclosures.
  • Take ownership of the day-to-day operation of Primrose Farm camp, leading activities, providing guidance to other part-time counselors/volunteers, supervising up to 18 children ages 5-12, and reporting to full-time staff.
  • Take initiative to develop stimulating activities for children.
  • Directly supervise all scheduled activities including off-site programs and pool visits.
  • Keep a running inventory of supplies and request supplies as needed in a timely manner.
  • Assist campers with basic livestock chores.
  • Follow all safety procedures that pertain to duties involved, including any current COVID-19 policies.
  • Perform first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Lift or move camp equipment and materials.
