The Prevention Facilitator spends their time working with youth (K-12) to help reduce risks around schooling, mental health, substance use, and decision making. This is accomplished via facilitating small or classroom size groups at local schools, community sites, and with other Sedgwick County agencies. These groups use evidence-based models shown to make a difference in the lives of young people. Our strategies include creating safe and accessible spaces for youth to ask questions, develop understanding, and broaden their skills. We tackle topics like emotions, mental health, self-image, substance use, boundary setting, social intelligence, and more. We seek outcomes such as improved school engagement, development of life skills, and avoidance of criminal behavior. We intentionally look to work with higher risk populations and have programs for specific ages and genders based on their needs and challenges. This position is highly independent, relying on the Facilitator to maintain their own schedule and groups, while being supported by their team and supervisor. The bulk of the work is completed in groups and at sites, but planning, preparation, data entry, and other duties may be completed remotely. Prevention Services offers a wide-net, low-barrier entry point into these conversations for youth. Our team is organized around the idea of being a consistent, positive presence in the lives of young people, educating them with honesty and relevance, and helping them build support systems as they navigate growing up. Last year we served over 2,200 youth at over 40 community sites. The ideal candidate for this team is someone who cares about their community, desires to make an impact, is a self-starter, and is not afraid to speak with groups of young people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.
