About The Position

The Pretreatment Inspector I is responsible for conducting on-site, scheduled, and unannounced inspections of industrial and commercial firms with a low degree of complexity, such as restaurants, food processors, and septage haulers. The primary goal is to ensure compliance with Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC), DEM, and Federal EPA rules and regulations. This role involves writing and negotiating Wastewater Discharge Permits, reviewing analytical data and various operational plans, performing basic mathematical calculations, and responding to emergency or special investigations. The inspector will also serve as a team leader during investigations if required, coordinate activities with Federal, State, and Local regulatory agencies, and stay current on regulatory requirements through professional development and literature review. Maintaining specific training standards and certificates is also a key aspect of the position.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a two-year technical college degree program such as chemistry, environmental science, biology/microbiology, plus.
  • Previous experience performing chemical/biological sampling routines required.
  • Thorough knowledge of EPA/NBC approved wastewater pretreatment operations and inspection and testing procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Must be proficient in MS word, Excel, and Power Point software programs.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing is required at time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site, scheduled, and unannounced inspections of Industrial and Commercial firms with a low degree of complexity such as restaurants, food processors, septage haulers, etc., to ensure compliance with Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC), DEM and Federal EPA rules and regulations.
  • Write/negotiate and issue Wastewater Discharge Permits, correspondence/reports.
  • Review analytical data/sample results and user pretreatment, process, operations, and spill control plans, etc.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Respond to emergency or special investigations as required.
  • Serve as team leader during investigation if called upon.
  • Work with all applicable Federal, State & Local regulatory agencies (DEM, EPA, DOH, fire/building officials, etc.) to ensure proper coordination of activities.
  • Remain current on regulatory requirements by attending professional conferences/seminars/courses, reviewing existing and proposed regulations, professional literature searches.
  • Maintain training standards/certificates such as HAZMAT, confined space entry, spill prevention response etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, within skill and experience capabilities.
