About The Position

The Press Secretary will be responsible for managing incoming inquiries from the media, assisting with the planning and set up of press conferences and traveling across the state to assist with events open to the media. Supervises direct reports including motivating, training, providing guidance and direction. The Press Secretary will also assist the Communications Director with managing the Communications Team and assigning duties to team members as needed. Supports the Communications Office in the development of effective and creative communications and public relations content and strategies. Drafts press releases, advisories, talking points, social media posts and other relevant press materials. Coordinates accurate and timely responses to press inquiries and public records requests. Works closely with Communications Director and Deputy Communications Director to align content with department objectives and goals. Plans, coordinates, and implements press conferences and media events statewide. Travels to press conferences and other public events on a weekly basis to facilitate media coverage. Develops and maintains professional relationships with members of the press. Performs and communicates effectively as well as develop policies and messaging while working with all capitol staff and department staff. Reviews internal and external Department communications content for grammar and accuracy. Monitors work of Communications Office staff and assign duties as needed. Incorporate goals, facts, goals and policies in on-target messaging to resonate with internal and external Department audiences.

Requirements

  • Must have “On the Record” experience or experience drafting responses for the media.
  • Must be comfortable with setting up press conferences and interacting with members of the press.
  • Must have experience drafting press releases and talking points for public events.
  • Must be able to travel on a weekly basis.
  • Must have the ability to set up speaking engagements and press conferences
  • Must have the ability to research and work with team members to develop well thought out responses to agency press inquiries
  • Must have the ability to prepare or coordinate preparation of slides/graphics for presentations
  • Must have the ability to develop public events
  • Must have the ability to compose and make speeches to various organizations
  • Must have the ability to review and resolve complaints
  • Must have the ability to review, interpret and analyze consumer complaints
  • Must have the ability to use the Internet as a research tool
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Must have the ability to provide information to others
  • Must have the ability to work in a team environment
  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Office and Outlook

Nice To Haves

  • Four (4) years of experience in communications is preferred.
  • A postsecondary degree from an accredited college or university in communications may be used as an alternative for years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
