About The Position

As a member of the Office of the Comptroller’s Executive Team, the Director of Media Relations role will work in close collaboration with the Director of Strategic Communications, the agency’s senior and executive leaders, and other state agencies and partners to: Develop and execute a media engagement strategy that explains & elevates the Office of the Comptroller. Leads and supervises media planning and engagement. Works with the media to educate the public about the resources and services provided by the agency. Improves external communications and information-sharing with Marylanders and external stakeholders. Promotes the agency’s key strategic initiatives with the media and other external stakeholders. PLEASE NOTE: Evening and Weekend work will be required.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in a communications role
  • Experience must include leading or managing at least one of the following: Development of organization wide or program specific communications or public relations strategies. Creation and execution of communications plans (internal, external, crisis, or media, audience targeting). Oversight of media relations, such as preparing press releases, outreach, coordinating interviews, or serving as organizational spokesperson.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in government communications and a professional background that includes serving in the capacity of Public Information Officer.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with excellent copy editing, briefing, and media pitching skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill with building and managing media relationships as well as a history of successful media relationships.
  • Proficiency in identifying and analyzing emerging issues
  • Professional success with developing and executing effective strategic communications plans, responses, statements, briefings, copy, press events, and materials
  • Experience creating and negotiating media engagement and media buying opportunities.
