About The Position

The Press Operator 2 is responsible for setting up, operating, adjusting, and maintaining a gravure or single/multi-color offset printing presses to produce high-quality printed materials. Tasks include interpreting job specifications, installing printing plates or cylinders, checking registration and image positioning, adjusting tension, and making necessary color or press adjustments to meet quality standards. Performs make-ready duties, minor repairs, and routine maintenance such as cleaning, lubrication, and part replacement. Ensures equipment runs efficiently and safely, following manufacturer guidelines and production requirements.

Requirements

Education equivalent to 8th grade plus additional classes.
Ability to read a tape measure
Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Skill to read and understand job specifications to determine press set-up materials needed to run the job successfully.
Requires knowledge of offset printing procedures, materials , equipment and safety requirements and skills to perform assignments.
Must have sufficient knowledge of press capabilities to determine the most appropriate use of the press and corrective adjustments required to run efficiently.
Knowledge of the appropriate amount of packing pressure needed to obtain the proper printing pressure for the type of job being run.
Skill in use of micrometer to mount and align the printing plate correctly.
Skill in routine operational maintenance and minor repairs to equipment.
Ability to make adjustments to feeder and feed board (e.g., ability to adjust suctions and blast, front and side guides and the timing of the head stops)
Read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work.
Able to communicate effectively in writing using proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
A team player who works well with others.

Responsibilities

Set up and operate single or multi-color offset printing presses according to job specifications.
Review and interpret job orders to determine press setup, including sheet orientation and color requirements.
Install and inspect printing plates or cylinders, and make adjustments for image alignment, tension, and registration.
Perform make-ready activities such as hanging plates, installing cylinders, prepping blankets, and adjusting tension and registration.
Inspect plates and cylinders for defects, ensuring accurate image alignment and quality output.
Execute color corrections and press adjustments to meet print quality standards prior to and during production.
Monitor press operation to detect malfunctions, ensuring consistent output and minimal downtime.
Review job specifications to determine the press setup according to the imposition of the run (sheet wise or work and turn).
Clean, lubricate, and maintain press equipment regularly to ensure optimal performance.
Perform minor repairs and replace worn or broken parts as necessary.
Follow manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedules and document service activities.
Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
