About The Position

The Prep Cook is responsible for preparing and serving food meals following local and state-mandated guidelines, ensuring that sanitation and safety practices are followed in schools and programs.

Requirements

  • High school, GED, or equivalent required
  • A KCMO Food Handlers permit is required and must be attained within 30 days
  • 6 months' experience in a commercial kitchen or a school kitchen
  • Valid driver's license and ability to deliver or pick up the food-related product
  • Ability to pass a background and drug screening.
  • Ability to work in a non-judgmental way with a diverse range of people, maintaining a respectful and inclusive culture.
  • Ability to lift, pull, or haul up to 40 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to perform work in extreme weather conditions, like cold environments, including freezer and refrigerator
  • Ability to work with various pieces of kitchen equipment (i.e., steamer, oven, stove, griddle, and steam table)

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to get and maintain Food Preparation Certifications
  • Culinary Arts Certification preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft and/or Google Suite and relevant software
  • ServSafe Food Safety & Sanitation Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists with properly receiving and storing food supply orders according to food safety standards; reports shortages to the Director of Food Service or Lead Cook.
  • Assists with the preparation of meals in compliance with USDA, DESE, & SFSP Nutritional guidelines.
  • Checks inventory ahead of time to ensure that all necessary food items are in inventory before the start of production, and notifies the Director of Food Service when items are needed.
  • Follows site-specific and program guidelines relating to the serving of meals.
  • Follows Master Kitchen Production Records to ensure that all program participants (students and older adults) receive correctly portioned meals.
  • Prepare food items that can be stored ahead of time.
  • Assists with monitoring food supplies and managing inventory to minimize waste.
  • Sanitizes, washes, and stores all items in the kitchen(s) and serving areas, following food safety policies.
  • Visually inspects and records temperatures of all food items sent from the Central kitchen prior to the serving of meals per Food Safety standards.
  • Returns all food items to Central Kitchen after the serving of meals per regulating authority.
  • Properly uses kitchen equipment and notifies the Director of Food Service when maintenance is required.
  • Assists with the cleaning, sanitation, and organization of the kitchen(s)and walk-in storage areas to maintain safety standards.
  • Attend and complete required job-related training classes, meetings, and workshops.
  • Deliver food-related items to other locations as needed while using GCI or GES vehicles.
  • Other duties as assigned.
