About The Position

An established, ENR-ranked commercial general contractor headquartered in Atlanta is expanding its Preconstruction team due to increasing project complexity and sustained growth across the Southeast. With average project sizes now ranging from $100M–$150M , and select projects reaching $300M+ , the organization is investing in additional engineering-level talent to strengthen internal capacity and support enhanced collaboration between preconstruction and operations. This is a growth-driven opportunity within a highly collaborative, relationship-focused regional builder. Position Summary The Preconstruction Engineer supports the Director of Preconstruction and operations teams in the development of competitive, accurate, and comprehensive project budgets. This role is responsible for quantity take-offs, subcontractor solicitation, scope analysis, and preparation of Comparison of Bid (COB) documentation across a range of commercial construction pursuits. The position is based in the Atlanta headquarters and works closely with project management and field leadership prior to project mobilization. Strong communication, attention to detail, and long-term relationship building with trade partners are critical to success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 1–4 years of commercial construction experience (internship, co-op, field engineer, or estimating background acceptable)
  • Experience working on structured commercial projects (exposure to larger-scale projects preferred)
  • Working knowledge of building systems, assemblies, and construction sequencing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with take-off and estimating tools such as Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar platforms
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build trade partner relationships
  • Demonstrated stability and long-term career mindset

  • Multifamily, mixed-use, higher education, or student housing project exposure
  • Experience within a structured estimating department
  • Field engineer background transitioning into preconstruction

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed quantity take-offs from design documents
  • Assist in developing conceptual budgets and GMP pricing for lump-sum and CM at Risk pursuits
  • Prepare and manage subcontractor bid invitations and follow-up communications
  • Develop and analyze Comparison of Bid (COB) sheets
  • Review drawings and specifications to identify scope gaps, design conflicts, and cost impacts
  • Prepare, track, and distribute preconstruction RFIs
  • Actively review scope and quantities with subcontractors prior to bid day
  • Assist with trade partner prequalification and supplier diversity efforts
  • Support project team during subcontractor buyout and purchasing
  • Coordinate closely with operations to ensure seamless transition from preconstruction to construction
