About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Precision Fabrication and Design Technician to work in our REC Fabrication Services department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Research and Education Campus with every other Friday off. You will fabricate, modify, assemble, adjust, and test components and assemblies to specific tolerances and design criteria to support engineering projects. You will report directly to the manager of the REC Fabrication Services department.

Requirements

  • Level 3: High school diploma, or equivalent, and 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Level 4: High school diploma, or equivalent, and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience includes related work experience, vocational certification, associate's degree, or trade apprenticeship.
  • Must have and demonstrate high-level skills in the fabrication process and be experienced in the use of major machine shop equipment.
  • Must be proficient in programing, posting, and executing Mastercam or comparable CAD/CAM systems in 4 or more axis.
  • Must be able to process a DXF drawing and solid model format through a CAM system to create machine code.
  • Experience in CNC machining, fabrication, and quality assurance is required.
  • Experience interpreting tolerances and GD&T inspection requirements is required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate mills, lathes (manual and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC)), and other machine shop equipment consistently and reliably to perform close tolerance precision machining and fabrication activities. Develop CNC programs.
  • Work with members of engineering and research groups in fabrication and assembly of components.
  • Document fabrication and quality related information in work packages. Provide accurate estimates of shop work and maintain the accuracy of work packages by ensuring documentation of activities as the work is completed.
  • Read and interpret drawings and sketches proficiently. Review designs with customers to help define job requirements, offer recommendations for improving product design, fabrication, testing, and assembly.
  • Work to drawings, schematics, and work specifications to produce successful outcomes using modern techniques and tools of the trade.
  • Provide status on jobs in progress to project leaders and management.
  • Communicate directly with engineering, designers, and scientific researchers to help resolve technical fabrication issues while at times functioning as a lead over the shop when directed by line management.
  • Resolve problems and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Perform On-the-Job (OJT) instruction training for qualification of other work disciplines.
