Job Summary: A Prepress Operator is responsible for preparing digital files for printing by ensuring they meet all technical requirements for press production. This role involves file inspection, layout correction, color management, and outputting proofs and printing plates or digital files to ensure high-quality print results.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree or certification in graphic design or print production is a plus
  • 2+ years of experience in a prepress or print production environment
  • Strong understanding of printing processes (offset, digital, large format)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
  • Experience with RIP software, imposition tools, and plate-making systems
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects

Responsibilities

  • Review, preflight, and correct digital files submitted for print production (PDFs, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Prepare files for printing by adjusting layout, resolution, color profiles, bleed, and trim
  • Operate prepress software and hardware such as RIP software, imposition tools, and plate setters
  • Generate proofs for customer approval (digital or hard copy)
  • Create and impose printing plates (for offset) or prepare files for digital presses
  • Maintain quality standards and ensure files are error-free before press
  • Troubleshoot prepress issues and communicate with designers, clients, and production staff
  • Archive completed projects and manage the file systems
  • Perform regular maintenance on prepress equipment
