About The Position

The Residential Life Intern will work collaboratively with Pre -College CAs and (S)RAs to create a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for the Pre-College community with the support and guidance of the Assistant Director for Pre-College Student Affairs. The Pre-College Residential Life Intern will report to the Assistant Director of Pre-College Student Affairs, assisting with the supervision, administration, and promotion of a diversified residential experience within the Pre-College residence hall community. This is a live-in position. Work hours will include evening hours and weekends, in addition to regular working hours. The position will start on May 25, 2026, and end on August 2, 2026. Position Overview and Purpose: The Residential Life Intern will work as part of the Pre-College Programs team in the summer and contribute to the success of the team by supporting student programming and residential staff. Demonstrating strong communication and organization skills, the Residential Life Intern will help to ensure the safety, security, and wellbeing of the Pre-College community, working effectively and efficiently through independent work but also as an integral member of a team. Requirements

  • Graduate students preferred
  • Relative experience in residential life, crisis management, and/or conflict resolution
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)
  • Residency in the assigned on-campus housing is mandatory for the full duration of the program. (Move-in date: May, 24, 2026 & Move-out date: August 2, 2026)

Responsibilities

  • STUDENT STAFF TRAINING AND SUPERVISION Assisting in the facilitation of RA training sessions with the Assistant Director and guest speakers
  • Advising staff in response to student situations such as policy violations, roommate issues, etc.
  • Participating in and assisting, if needed, all-staff, all-student, and building-specific meetings in coordination with the Assistant Director.
  • Serving as a back-up CA as needed when Pre-College programs are in session.
  • EMERGENCY RESPONSE Supporting CAs in serving as the first line of response in residence halls for issues such as fires, medical and mental health emergencies, lost child protocol, etc.
  • Coordinating with the Assistant Director to offer support to CAs, (S)RAs, and students in emergency situations.
  • Assisting CAs in coordinating emergency room/urgent care trips for students.
  • Assisting university officials in the event of an emergency and during any investigation process if needed.
  • PROGRAM & EVENT PLANNING Assisting the Assistant Director on operations and logistics of student arrivals,, Opening Day, Orientation Day, Move-out/Closing Days, trips, and events.
  • Coordinating staff for all events, activities, trips, and clubs.
  • Assisting the Assistant Director in supporting the 3-week and 5-week activities, as well as any additional events/programming.
  • Purchasing items (materials, food, etc.) needed for staff training, Opening Weekend, student programming, move-out weekends, etc.
  • TRANSPORTATION COORDINATION Planning and scheduling the staff logistics of airport transportation for International Student Arrival Day and Opening Day with the Assistant Director.
  • Supporting the welcome/check-in process for arriving students at Pittsburgh International Airport.
  • Managing/overseeing the check-in process for airport shuttles on Closing Days.
  • COMMUNICATION Reporting all staff and student concerns/requests to the Assistant Director in a timely manner and following up on requests if appropriate.
  • Serving as a communication coordinator among students, CAs, (S)RAs, and the Assistant Director.
  • STUDENT MANAGEMENT Supporting the Assistant Director in addressing student issues or concerns, if appropriate.
  • Assisting CAs with overseeing all curfew processes (and lost child protocol when necessary), communicating any issues to the Assistant Director.
  • Checking and reviewing building incident reports daily, following up with (S)RAs and students involved, and reporting to the Assistant Director daily.
  • Maintaining confidential student records/information.
  • Supporting the Assistant Director in meeting with students as necessary and if appropriate.
  • COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Enforcing the zero-tolerance bullying policy throughout the Pre-College community.
  • Ensuring that the shared vision, values, and code of conduct of Pre-College Programs is upheld throughout the housing communities and among students and staff.
  • Being a positive role model to Pre-College students by providing an example of students who are involved on campus and living well-balanced lifestyles.
  • ADMINISTRATION AND OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES Completing required training to receive and be responsible for the procurement card (P-Card) provided by the Office of Pre-College Programs and completing required transaction verification submissions in a timely manner.
  • Completing required transaction verification submissions for all purchases made with P-Card within 48 hours of purchase.
  • Entering information for all purchases made with P-Card into a building budget spreadsheet.
  • Documenting and keeping records of student-related and RA/CA-related issues.
  • Creating/updating documents necessary to improve processes and better serve Pre-College students as well as RA/CA needs, if appropriate.
  • Executing and managing the student Absence From Campus (AFC) Request process, including phone and email communication with parents/guardians & students of the assigned housing community.
  • Monitoring ticket sales for student trips, creating trip rosters with bus assignments, and communicating pertinent trip information to RAs scheduled as chaperones.
  • Assisting the Assistant Director in the completion of final walk-throughs of residence halls to ensure all housing facilities (student dorm rooms, assigned floors, front desk area, kitchens, refrigerators, lobbies, bulletin boards, door decorations, and other building common areas) are cleaned, organized and returned to their original condition.
  • Working with CAs and (S)RAs to organize and move out items left by Pre-College students.
  • Maintaining daily communication with the Assistant Director and providing updates to the Assistant Director on student, staff, and programming issues.
  • Providing the Assistant Director with feedback and updates as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.
