About The Position

The Lineman is responsible for constructing, repairing, and maintaining overhead and underground Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS). The Lineman regularly works on poles and/or steel towers while operating aerial utility equipment. The candidate will possess considerable experience and depth in constructing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining medium voltage electrical distribution systems and associated utility equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or higher level and accredited Lineman schooling.
  • Experience in the high voltage industry.
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License.
  • Able to communicate effectively (i.e. reading, writing, speaking) in the English language.
  • Able to provide your own hand tools.
  • Able to read blueprints.
  • Possess a safe driving record.
  • Able to obtain a DOT Medical card and keep it current throughout employment
  • Competent documentation skills.
  • Both mental and physical labor are a part of this craft.
  • Working conditions could be indoor or outdoor and the job may be subject to extreme weather conditions.
  • Some light to moderate travel is possible.

Responsibilities

  • Install, remove, transfer, maintain and/or repair cross arms, pins, insulators, guys, transformer and switch racks and other overhead pole equipment using a variety of hand tools, equipment, and power tools
  • Install and/or remove transformers, cut-outs, disconnecting switches, circuit breakers and other overhead line devices, and working with crew to raise or lower EDS equipment
  • Perform emergency repairs; performs load checks to balance feeders
  • Inspect lines, poles, and equipment for signs of damage or wear and reports all preventive maintenance
  • Transport poles, dig holes, anchor poles and other operations involved in the setting or demolition of poles; may erect steel towers
  • Troubleshoot EDS problems on company and customer equipment
  • Conduct jobs in accordance with current codes and site-specific procedures while following applicable safety procedures.
  • Ensure all medium Voltage equipment and PPE are in proper working order and tested/certified to meet or exceed OSHA requirements.
  • Utilize a working knowledge of BLS Electrical medium Voltage Safety and Grounding Manuals.
  • Communicate with other crew members to maintain satisfactory work site safety and project site specific conditions.
  • Mentor Apprentices from beginning to end of assignment to ensure quality work and facilitate learning.
  • Ensure all resources are available for Apprentices to progress satisfactorily in their apprenticeships.
  • Take an active role in Apprentice on-the-job training.
  • Increase job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical and regulation publications, as applicable.
  • Perform duties as assigned.
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance for distribution systems up to 34.5 kV
  • Pole & pad mount transformer knowledge
  • Substations, reclosers, capacitors and secondary distribution knowledge.
  • Ability to work on energized systems safely with/without supervision
  • Will work under the direction of a Line Crew Foreman but have the knowledge and ability to lead the crew if the foreman is not present.
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance for distribution systems up to 34.5 kV

  • Substations, reclosers, capacitors and secondary distribution knowledge
  • Ability to work on energized systems safely with direct supervision only
  • Will work under the direction of a Line Crew Foreman
