Bring your energy to DTE. Together, we can achieve great things.   Under direct and intermittent direction of an Operating Supervisor, Senior Power Plant Operator, and occasional work direction of another Power Plant Operator, operates all power plant equipment.  Performs operating care and minor maintenance on all power plant equipment and performs related duties as assigned.  Assists in the training of other operating personnel as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must currently be or have previously been classified as a Power Plant Operator, Assistant Power Plant Operator, Fuel Supply Operator, Nuclear Power Plant Operator, or Nuclear Assistant Power Plant Operator.
  • OR
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED and have successfully completed the Assistant Power Plant Operator In-Training Program, the Steam Generation Course or equivalent power plant technology program completed at a recognized educational institution.
  • OR
  • Must have 5 year’s experience in operating and in providing operating care for high pressure boilers, turbines and electrical auxiliary equipment.
  • Must acquire a Steam Plant Certificate within 36 months.
  • Must successfully complete within 36 months the Basic Electricity course for Production Organization or pass the Achievement Test in basic electricity (in lieu of taking course) to stay in the job.
  • Must work shifts assigned.
  • Must obtain an evaluation of "Recommended" on the Plant Operator Selection System (POSS). A practice test can be found on the DTE website (click on careers link, hiring process, skills testing).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and meet company driving standards.
  • Must communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must successfully complete an 8–10-week training course at the Training and Development Center which will be your assigned location throughout the training period.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out operating orders and instructions of Supervisors, Sr Power Plant Operators, and other Power Plant Operators.
  • Operates and/or directs the work of other PPOs in the operation of power plant equipment.
  • Diagnoses, compensates and corrects various operating conditions on assigned equipment using automatic control systems or manual regulation & process control equipment.
  • Operates plant wastewater systems to maintain water quality to meet State & Federal regulations.
  • Performs or directs others to perform the operating care and minor maintenance of power plant equip
  • Assists in operating steam generators, turbo generators & electrical equipment to maintain loads, voltage frequencies, pressures, temperatures, flows, etc.
  • Plans, coordinates and perform switching and tagging of all power plant & switchyard equipment.
  • Relieve the Supervising Operator in the control room for periods of less than 1 hour per shift.
  • Reads & interprets Operating Orders and Procedures, blueprints, drawings, diagrams and manuals.
  • Reads & record data from various plant instrumentation.
  • Maintains files of switching orders, work orders, lubrication records, switching records and reports.
  • Uses computers to initiate and process work order requests and work orders.
  • Monitors and/or operates desktop and process control computers to diagnose, compensate, and correct various operating conditions.
  • Inspects, monitors and troubleshoots all power plant equipment for correct operation or safety.
  • Looks for defects in equipment, faulty operation, poor housekeeping, fire hazards, unsafe working conditions, etc.
  • Takes corrective action, checks with supervision.
  • Recommends and assists in developing changes in operating procedures.
  • Accepts and/or rejects new, rebuilt or replaced power plant equipment for service.
  • Keeps plant supervision and other operators informed of status of operating equipment and conditions.
  • Performs routine tests of equipment and works with other groups to set up and run special tests.
  • Assists in developing and preparing training units and training other personnel.
  • Acts as a member of the incipient fire brigade and operates firefighting equipment.
  • Operates Condor Lifts and pickup trucks to appropriate to perform job duties and maintains necessary certifications for that equipment.
