About The Position

Monitors and controls the Subway/Light Rail AC Light and Power, and the DC Traction Power Systems to assure safe and reliable transportation system operation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of four (4) years experience in electrical power, including Substation, Overhead or Underground Maintenance or Signal Dept. Maintenance required.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education (i.e., two (2) years of related experience, equating to one (1) year of formal post high school education) may be considered in lieu of the above requirements.
  • Ability to read and utilize electrical drawings required.
  • Must possess general knowledge of the operation of PECO supplied power for the City and Suburban lines, Power Distribution, lighting and signaling system.
  • Must possess ability to work effectively and make decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Operates CTD and STD substations, remote rooms, motor-operated switches, and grounding switches using SCADA.
  • Coordinates with the Train Dispatcher, Elmwood Controller, Suburban Controller, and concerned utilities for matters relating to power outages.
  • Directs personnel performing cable and equipment switching and blocking operations. Prepares and issues power permits to assure worker safety.
  • Manages the testing and maintenance of AC cables, DC feeder cables, substation equipment, remote room breakers, and other electrical equipment. Coordinates the activities of the Overhead, Underground and Substation departments.
  • Maintains records indicating the availability of cables, sectionalizing switches, and substation equipment, and the status of in-progress repairs to these and other power system components.
  • Monitors fire and intrusion alarms at substations and electrical apparatus rooms. Notifies appropriate personnel when alarms are received.
  • Refers non-power related trouble calls to the proper authority.
  • Manages and directs available resources during electric service interruptions to assure that power is restored quickly and safely.
  • Coordinates activities with Buildings, Signals, Track, and other SEPTA departments during planned or emergency power outages.
  • Issues timely notifications to appropriate members of EM&C management in the event of electric service interruptions, transportation disruptions resulting from power outages, serious injuries, or other emergencies. Compiles incident logs and chronological reports.
  • Keeps an accurate record of routine Power operations, uses personal computers to complete the Daily Power Dispatchers Report and to prepare other reports and documents as required.
  • Communicates with representatives of PECO, PGW, PWD, Verizon, and other utilities and government agencies. Serves as a point of contact for contractors working on or near SEPTA electrical facilities.
  • Serves as a Power Department representative in meetings with other SEPTA departments and outside contractors.
  • Backfills Assistant Director position during absences or vacation periods.
  • Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
