About The Position

The THz instrumentation lab at University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to lead the day-to-day operations of the lab's contributions to the NASA ASTHROS and TIMballoon observatories. Experience with balloon borne astronomical observatory software architecture,testing of THz receiver systems and components for both coherent and direct detector instruments are desired qualifications. In addition, the candidate will help the professor set up the new THz instrumentation lab, act as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate researchers working in the lab, serve as lab manager and assist the professor with the development of new project ideas and proposals. Daily mentoring of junior colleagues and laboratory management, with independent decision making. The work is highly technical and unique. Few, if any, routine well established methods will be used. The candidate will be responsible for developing new techniques and methods and documenting those processes

Requirements

  • Education: A PhD in astrophysics or a related field by the time of appointment.
  • Experience: Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analyses.
  • Skills: Instrument and observatory software development.
  • THz receiver system testing.
  • Balloon campaign field support and leadership.
  • Mentoring of junior colleagues.
