About The Position

Established in 1946, the Texas A&M University Department of Construction Science has led the way in excellence of construction in higher education. Both graduate and undergraduate programs were among the first in the nation to be accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). With approximately 1,050 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, our department continues to lead the way as one of finest programs of construction in the nation. The Department of Construction Science at Texas A&M University invites applications for a postdoctoral position for individuals with expertise in automation, construction management, and occupational safety and health. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Safety Innovation Integration Research Lab (SIIR-Lab), you will contribute to projects focused on worker safety and health, highway work zones, wearable biosensors, cognitive science, and immersive learning. This role provides an opportunity to advance scholarly research in collaboration with an experienced faculty mentor. In this position, you will work with a multidisciplinary team to lead and support initiatives aimed at developing tools and guidelines that assist agencies in implementing effective safety measures. This Postdoctoral Research Associate position will require approximately 100% effort dedicated to research activities, with an anticipated duration of two years, contingent upon project funding and performance.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Occupational Safety Management, or a related field.
  • Candidates will need to have completed their Ph.D. or have it completed by the start of employment.
  • Exceptional ability to articulate research objectives and hypotheses.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with proficiency in quantitative research methodologies and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent analytical ability and in-depth experience with at least one programming language.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to manage multiple research tasks effectively.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of relevant professional experience in worker safety, transportation safety, or human factors.
  • Familiarity with advanced traffic safety interventions and emerging technologies in work zone safety management.
  • Experience in conducting field studies.
  • Knowledge of human factors in engineering and its application to transportation/worker safety.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing funding for research projects.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied and basic research on sponsored projects in the area of worker safety and health.
  • Conducting and writing literature reviews and critical literature synthesis.
  • Desk data collection of safety and public health data.
  • Developing and implementing novel research methodologies aimed at improving worker safety and health.
  • QA/QC of collected and analyzed data and data validation and verification against independent sources.
  • Data summary and analysis.
  • Developing visualization tools to present results.
  • Develop proposals that will be submitted to external funding agencies.
  • Prepare high-quality research deliverables, including project briefs, reports, journal publications for peer-review, and presentations.
  • Lead papers for academic journals from submission to review and up until publication.
  • Manage projects or tasks in a larger project including the potential to supervise graduate research assistants and student workers and interns who will support the candidate’s role.
  • Plan, administer, implement and evaluate research activities, coordinate with other team members, support staff and PI, and will provide oversight to student employees on the same projects.
  • Leading or participating in meetings, presenting research ideas, methods and findings, and documenting meeting minutes, discussions and outcomes with funders, collaborators and the research team.
