JOB SUMMARY The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be an active member of the Laboratory for the Modeling of Biological and Sociotechnical Systems (MOBS Lab) within the Network Science Institute at Northeastern University. MOBS Lab focuses on research projects aimed at developing innovative mathematical models and computational tools to better characterize, understand, and anticipate large-scale complex networks and systems. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will perform basic and applied research on complex problems involving the development of new theories and methodologies. The research will be largely focused on the development of predictive computational tools for the analysis of the spatial spread of emerging diseases. The successful candidate must be able to develop code to generate simulations and analyze large, complex datasets. They will be expected to carry out independent research and analysis, as well as write scholarly articles, contribute to grant proposals, attend lab meetings, present research, and mentor doctoral students.

Requirements

  • The position of Postdoctoral Research Associate requires a Ph.D. or equivalent in a quantitative field.
  • The candidate must be able to undertake full-time research or scholarship, as well as work under the supervision of a senior scholar.
  • The candidate must have significant computational and applied statistical skills that can be applied to modeling and forecasting the spread of infectious diseases.
  • They must be able to handle, process, and analyze very large datasets of epidemic indicators, such as case surveillance data, cellular phone data, and mobility patterns.
  • PhD in a quantitative field such as mathematics, network science, statistics, physics, computer science, or related disciplines.
  • Strong background and experience in mathematical and computational modeling of infectious disease dynamics, preferably with applications to emerging or re-emerging diseases.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for data analysis and model development.
  • Experience in working with large and complex datasets from diverse sources such as surveillance systems, genomic sequences, social media, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and interdisciplinary research environment.
