About The Position

The Program in Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Native American and Indigenous Studies. The position begins on August 16, 2026 and ends one year from date of hire. We seek candidates with a strong research and teaching profile in Native American and Indigenous Studies. As a multidisciplinary program, we welcome candidates from all Liberal Arts fields. Candidates will be reviewed by the relevant academic department as well as by NAIS. The Program in Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) at The University of Texas at Austin has a global, comparative focus with a particular strength in the Americas. Our undergraduate certificate and graduate portfolio allow students to develop a comprehensive understanding of Indigenous thought, history, and issues.We also provide a community for NAIS students and faculty affiliates through seminars, workshops, social events, and support for student organizations. Requirements

  • Must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. prior to start date and not have received Ph.D. more than 3 years prior to start date.

  • Cover letter - Please include in your cover letter information about the status of your dissertation and the date of completion (completed or expected). The cover letter should also describe possible course offerings and a research/writing plan for the fellowship year.
  • Writing sample of no more than 30 pages
  • 3 work references with their contact information; at least one reference should be from a supervisor

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in the area of Native American and Indigenous Studies and actively contribute to the intellectual life of NAIS through participation in the program's interdisciplinary workshops and events, other research-oriented events of the NAIS Program, and a workshop about their own research.
  • Teach one course each semester: one should be an introductory course while the other may be a more specialized upper division course.
  • Other related functions as assigned.
