The Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to lead research in digital health and multi-agentic coordination. This role requires the development of self-learning artificial intelligence models tailored for dynamic healthcare environments. The candidate designs and implements multi-agent systems to optimize clinical decision support and patient monitoring. Rigorous testing of AI safety protocols ensures the reliability and ethical deployment of these autonomous models. The investigator collaborates with interdisciplinary clinical teams to integrate these computational tools directly into hospital workflows. Routine duties include algorithm optimization and the evaluation of model performance on large-scale electronic health records. The fellow prepares manuscripts for high-impact journals and contributes data to federal grant proposals.

Requirements

  • Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in Computer Science or Biomedical Informatics or a closely related quantitative field.
  • The successful candidate demonstrates documented expertise in machine learning and distributed artificial intelligence systems.
  • Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow is mandatory for this position.
  • Prior experience with healthcare data environments accelerates the timeline for project deliverables.
  • The fellow communicates complex computational concepts to clinical stakeholders during weekly departmental reviews.
  • A strong publication record in relevant computer science or medical informatics venues provides evidence of research capability.
  • The appointee adheres strictly to institutional data security and AI governance standards throughout all project phases.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g. M.B.B.S., Sc.D., D.V.M.)

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation of experiments, including raw experimental data and laboratory notebooks.
  • Monitor progress of research projects and coordinate with Principal Investigator and Program team to stay on budget and schedule to meet the milestones and deliverables
  • Adhere to University standards regarding use of isotopes, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and the like.
