A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Oertel within an internationally well-known group of liver researchers in the Organ Pathobiology and Therapeutics Institute, Dept. of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Oertel is also a faculty member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and of the Pittsburgh Liver Research Center. Our laboratory has extensive experience with stem cells and liver cell transplantation and has made significant contributions to regenerative medicine. The goal is to develop successful cell-and small-molecule-based therapies for cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases. Our active research also focuses on the mechanisms that regulate senescence, a key component of liver injury and cirrhosis. The experimental work will involve the characterization of specific cell populations in the liver, as well as their isolation, and in vitro studies related to the project. Key procedures will include molecular biology applications, the generation/production of vector constructs and their use in cell culture and in vivo studies, immunohistochemical analyses, and microscopy. The candidate will be responsible for managing experimental animal colonies, performing surgical procedures, and working on tasks involved in the collection and analysis of laser-captured tissue samples. The candidate will also be responsible for assisting and supervising research studies, as well as training and supervision of lab members. Responsibilities will also include presentations of research findings at regularly scheduled internal meetings, as well as national conferences, and any other assignments that the principal investigator may request.
