About The Position

The Port Captain is responsible for supervising the vessel Masters and overseeing project safety, training and regulatory compliance programs. This position reviews and approves purchase requisitions, attends client meetings, and provides back-up support to the General Manager. The Port Captain must be willing and able to operate project vessels when needed. 10% annual bonus potential

Requirements

  • HS Diploma.
  • U.S.C.G. license endorsed as Master of Motor Vessels of at least 500 gross tons upon Inland Waters.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card), and/or ability to obtain and maintain.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification, and/or ability to obtain and maintain.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Copy of DD214, if Veteran status.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with the passengers, guests, and fellow employees.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, quickly-changing environment.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to develop and execute innovative solutions to crew management and morale issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to bring increased value to task through efficiencies and cost-control.
  • Computer literacy with MS Office software
  • 5 years’ experience in the passenger vessel industry demonstrating the ability to handle growing levels of responsibility.
  • 3 years’ experience as Senior Captain or above of a large passenger vessel.
  • Specific training and experience in management of major on-board systems by type and brand.
  • Excellent career record in marine industry.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent of experience, from an accredited institution preferred.
  • 1 year experience as Master with Pierce County Ferry, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure vessel(s) is operated within all pertinent laws, regulations and guidelines mandated by federal, state or local agencies as well as the dictates of prudent marine practice.
  • Ensure safety of guests and fellow-workers is maximized through careful and vigorous administration and enforcement of safety policies and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment (i.e. fire extinguishers, life preservers, work vest).
  • Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Handle and dispose of all chemicals and other types of hazardous or caustic materials in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) (as required).
  • Report safety related concerns.
  • Fulfill the task of Master/Mate as required
  • Hire, train, discipline and manage the day-to-day activities of the members of the marine department.
  • Manage and maintain the crew schedule.
  • Manage the departmental budget ensuring that all spending is conscious, careful and focused.
  • Assist in managing the day-to-day maintenance of the vessel(s) such that the highest standard for readiness, reliability, safety and cosmetic appeal is attained within the bounds of our resources and constraints.
  • Lead officers and crew to a high level of performance and productivity while maintaining the authority to critique, evaluate and discipline.
  • Ensure that the policies of the Company and its client are understood by, valued and followed by officers and crew.
  • Enter into frequent and searching dialogues with all levels of crew to gain perception of crew morale and current issues; ensure this position is accessible and a source of fair decisions.
  • Develop strong relationships with appropriate members of client staff and represent HMS as helpful, cooperative and proactive members of the larger organization
  • Participate in HMSGM internal meetings, seminars, conference calls and other functions as required.
  • Complete required administrative forms clearly and accurately, including Accident/Incident Reports and any/all other required HR forms/processes.
  • Seek the highest levels of quality and professionalism. Work to achieve the highest levels of performance and productivity. Seek continuous improvement.
  • Understand and comply with the Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Understand and comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain Crew Qualification binder.
  • Collaborate with other HMS personnel to remain attentive to regulatory requirements and alert to regulatory changes.
  • Assist Master in ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations.
  • Assist Master in ensuring vessel is in an inspection-ready condition at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel for meetings, conferences, training, and operational support as directed.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.
