About The Position

Performs lifeguard and aquatic safety activities and prevents accidents in and around a swimming pool at a college.

Requirements

  • Rules, regulations, and ordinances related to the operation and use of college swimming pools and swimming pool equipment
  • Water safety and lifesaving methods including techniques of resuscitation and first aid
  • Health standards and safety practices for swimming pools
  • Emergency procedures to obtain rescue services
  • Apply swimming and pool rescue techniques
  • Enforce applicable rules and regulations and maintain discipline
  • Remain calm in emergencies, assess situations accurately, and think and act quickly
  • Remain alert and maintain focus of attention for long periods of time without being distracted
  • Administer first aid, including CPR
  • Work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the public
  • Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
  • A valid Lifeguard Training Certificate or its equivalent issued by the American Red Cross or American Lifeguard Association.
  • A valid First Aid Certificate or its equivalent issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • A valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate or its equivalent issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • A valid Water Safety Instructor Certificate issued by the American Red Cross may be required for some positions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a swimming pool or beach lifeguard is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces applicable rules, regulations, and ordinances at a college swimming pool to prevent accidents.
  • Rescues persons in danger of drowning and administers CPR and first aid when necessary.
  • Checks air temperature and chemical content and temperature of water, and brings non-standard conditions to the attention of persons responsible for pool maintenance.
  • Inspects and monitors the use of pool equipment and reports unsanitary, unsafe, or hazardous conditions.
  • Performs minor emergency repair, maintenance, and clean-up work required to prevent accidents and to maintain maximum health standards.
  • Answers inquiries and provides information to the public regarding swimming programs and special events.
  • May assist in swimming and lifesaving instruction.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
